Guest guest
Hello, all. I am a new member of the group, but certainly no " recent " WLS graduate. Someone on the AOL Bariatric Surgery Support board suggested that I check this list out. Thank you. My name is Jacque, " Jac " to my friends. I had WLS on May 6, 1982. I am 20-1/2 years post surgery. I weighed 315 on the day of my surgery, and I lost 175 lbs. I have maintained my weight at about 150 lbs for the last 20 years. I am 5'10 " . I've never had any serious complications or side effects from my surgery, other than developing gastric reflux. Tagamet has pretty much taken care of that. I did suffer from dumping syndrome for awhile, but learned that walking for 15 minutes after a meal helped take care of that as well. I still have a problem occasionally with something I eat (never the same thing every time) just doesn't agree with me, and it is going to come back up! I don't eat a lot of meat, either red or white, and I hate fish. I don't tolerate fried foods, or food with a high fat content well, either. So, I just don't eat those things! Consequently, I haven't really had the BM problems that have recently been discussed. The surgery I had was called a Mason By-Pass, named for the doctor who pioneered bariartric surgery. The surgery was the predecessor of the RNY surgery. My stomach was made smaller (less than 3 ounce capacity), with 4 rows of surgical steel staples, and my intestines were moved from the bottom of my stomach (none of which was actually removed) to a new opening at the side. None of my intestinal tract was removed either. I was very careful to follow my doctor's instructions for behavior modification, and I think that my doing so is the biggest reason for my success. To this day, if I eat even one bite too much, I get ill. Sometimes that's just nausea, sometime it means I'm going to throw up. The other thing I found that helped tremendously was to walk for at least 15 minutes after a meal. It helped to " settle " my stomach, and it got my metabolism kicked into a higher gear. I didn't do it so much in the years I spent as a police officer (I joined the Oklahoma City Police Department 2 years after my surgery), because most of the time, I was doing well to find time to grab a bite to eat at all, much less walk! I'm retired now from police work (on the job injury), but I still run a small horse farm (20 horses), and caring for them keeps me physically active enough that I don't really need any additional exercise. In my opinion, the two biggest reasons for failure with any WLS is failure to modify your eating habits, and maintaining the same sedentary lifestyle you had before WLS. I don't know how much I'll be able to contribute here, but I certainly enjoy reading about how well everyone else is doing! Guest guest
Thanks, . Add " knowledge " of one other at almost 20 years...my mother. She had surgery almost 1 year to the day after I did. Post surgery, she had gall bladder problems and a hiatal hernia, but those were taken care of about a year after her surgery, and she's maintained a weight of about 115 since. I was 26 when I had surgery. She was 44.
