Got my surgery done exactly a week ago today (upper and lower) and

was curious as to when I could start using straws again. This

syringe business is getting on my nerves.

My doctor said absolutely not for the whole six weeks. It puts too

much pressure on the healing bones/stitches. Other people's docs

seem to let them right away. Ask your OS what he feels is safe for

the procedure you had done and the way he did it.

My surgeon said no straws too (I had upper/lower/genio). And be

careful blowing your nose, I was told no nose-blowing by the

hospital. When I asked my surgeon about that (at about the 2 week

point, I think), he said, you could blow VERY GENTLY (like a gentle

puff) with your mouth OPEN. I would check with your surgeon on that

one too, to make sure, if you're planning on blowing your nose.

You want to avoid pressure in the mouth.

I didn't find the syringe to be a problem, I actually preferred it to

the zippies. It took me a long time to be able to drink from a cup,

so I syringed for quite awhile.

I had upper/lower/genio and am 9 days post-op. Doc says I can use

straws with very thin liquids only. Been using them since without a

problem.
