Guest guest
Hi All! My daughter is having surgery to bring her lower jaw forward this summer. She's had braces on since last August. I guess as a parent I've been second guessing my decision to put her through this. Would like some feedback from someone who's had this done - how painful was the surgery and recovery, would you do it over again? we're committed to doing it since the way the braces were put on was with the intent of having the surgery done. Just want some reinforcement that this WILL be a good thing !! Thanks!! Worried Mom
Guest guest
Hi Mom! My son had upper, lower, chin moved, implant, and all 4 wisdom teeth removed on March 9. I was scared to death. He has done great! He went to the prom 2 1/2 weeks later and looked very good. He is 17 and really wanted it done, and it has made a world of difference. He was a good kid before, but he seems so much happier. Not only is there a difference in his appearance (not huge noticable, just better), but his whole disposition is more carefree. I think his underbite bothered him much more than he ever let on. The night of the surgery was rough, just keeping the blood out of his mouth so he wouldn't get sick. We went home the next day. His swelling was bad to me, but not as bad as most, according to the dr. His pain wasn't bad at all, probably the wisdom teeth removal caused the most pain. He was eating soft foods in one week, and now 7 weeks later he is eating everything, including pizza. His ortho said everything is great, he wore rubber bands for 6 weeks and they said he doesn't need them anymore. May have his braces off in 6 weeks! The negatives have been the weight loss, 15 pounds; still doesn't have much appetitie; he was really tired for a few weeks; he is still somewhat numb in the chin area; his face has broken out from the steroids they gave during the surgery. The pluses are a great, normal look; so much happier kid, very little pain, and everything has gone better and quicker than predicted; and he is very grateful for me taking such good care of him My 15 year old daughter gets her braces next week and the surgery, hopefully, in one year. I know exactly how you feel and I cried when they wheeled him off to surgery. When he came out of recovery and we met him in his room he said " what's up mom? " and I was so relieved. It is so worth every bit of the surgery. I'll be glad to help you in anyway! a > Hi All! > > My daughter is having surgery to bring her lower jaw forward this > summer. Guest guest
Hello, I had a lower jaw advancement, and a minimal sideways movement, two years ago. I had little pain, and the pain I did have was well controlled with medications, which gave me no trouble at all. I had no numbness. Yes. I would do it again. Since the surgery fixed my " destructive bite, " in the words of my periodontist, my problems there are much less difficult. I have had relief from TMJ discomfort, for the most part. I am concerned about your daughter's age, and whether she has completed her growth. Not that I'm a dentist, but it's a question worth asking. Some folks who have had surgery, then had a growth spurt, have found themselves needing another surgical repair. I didn't have that problem, as I was 56 at the time of the surgery! ;~) Cammie > Hi All! > > My daughter is having surgery to bring her lower jaw forward this > summer. Guest guest
For my money, even one wisdom tooth was way worse than anything I felt from the surgery. But I did have lots of nice morphine and Lortab to help keep me happy, and I used it. (It's better and easier to stay ahead of the pain than to have to play catch-up.) There is a study of the hand, done with x-rays, that the docs can do to give some assurances about growth. What I don't know is whether they have to start this with a baseline early x-ray, then compare it. You might mention to the surgeon, if you feel so inclined, that someone said something about it, and ask again. But if you're confident in your doc and his judgment -- well, he's in the business and I'm not! He also has the degrees, diplomas and experience, which I do not.
