Since there tend to be a lot of x-rays involved before and after

surgery, this info may be useful to those who are pregnant and

considering surgery.

" CHICAGO, Illinois (Reuters) -- Pregnant women who undergo dental X-

rays may raise their risk of having low birth-weight babies,

researchers have found.... "

That's a good recommendation, Neil. But they have a bigger problem

ahead of them, too.

My hospital insisted that I take a pregnancy test before they'd let

me into the OR -- and I was 56, already through the menopause and had

been taking hormones for a couple of years! If I'd been pregnant, I

don't think I could have had the surgery until I had recovered from

the delivery.

After reading a post before about someone getting a pregnancy test, I was

expecting this and was told that I would have one. When I went to the hospital

on Thursday to pre-register and had blood taken to match my donated blood and to

do a blood count, the nurse told me that they would not do the pregnancy test

that day. I will actually have to have blood drawn again on the morning of the

surgery (next Wed) just for the pregnancy test!

My surgeon said that it is definite NO to doing this surgery while pregnant,

even though he has okayed me breastfeeding afterwards.

That's completely consistent with what they did with me. I checked

into the hospital at 12:01 the morning of my surgery, and they drew

blood for the pregnancy test between that time and the time I went

down for the surgery.
