Guest guest
Dear Marilyn, your blood sugar levels are nothing....you have very good levels. My doctor is concerned if they get over 200+. With the meds the highest mine have gotten is 185. The okay level is 80 to 120. After my major flare in 98 doc said that the diabetes may actually go away. It didn't but I'm sure I could be better about food. When I was first diagnosed it was chicken breasts and low fat. Now I'm eathing normal food and it still doesn't go up. Go Figure.....I've always been an old ball anyway....Love Sue
Guest guest
Dear and Liz, Thanks so much for letting me know about the blood sugar levels. I appreciate having the information. Think I will ask my pcp when I go in for my check up next month and see what he thinks. I am really bad about not watching what I eat because I never had to in the past. If I would watch it closer then I probably wouldn't get those 140 readings. It's probably not real good to go from the 80's in the AM to the 140's by mid afternoon. Right??? Hope you are all having a real good day. The morning started out real dreary, cold, and wet here, then when I got up from my rest the sun was shining and it was actually getting hot. Time to get my sweat shirt off. My son woke me from a very sound nap to tell me he had the pond in out in the back yard. Well, the hole is dug and the liner is in but that's all that is done. Have to go get some rocks tomorrow. Judee, thanks for the jokes, loved them. To everyone on the list, hope you are all feeling well and having a good day. You are all in my prayers. Guest guest
Marilyn, I became a little confused - have you been dx with diabetes? I assumed you had, otherwise why would you check? But if you have I would still say you are doing a good job, that is the range Diabetes UK recommends you try to stay in. It is always good to check regularly and do a threemonthly HB1AC (I think that is what its called) This gives the doctor a much betteridea of your control over the last three months. If you have not been diagnosed DEFINITELY check with your pcp!!!!! I find it very encouraging to read about people like Steve Redgrave who one a fifth gold medal for rowing in the Sydney Olympics, AFTER he had been dx with type 2 diabetes. You take care of yourself, I agree it is adrag watching what you eat, but its worth it!! Guest guest
Hi Heidi, I my primary internal medicine doctor yesterday. My Hgb A1c was 6.6! Last time it was 7.8. They are both higher than the norm high of 6. But the fact I brought it down a whole point was great. She gave me the name of an Endocrinologist she thinks will work out well. She didn't care for my old one either. I'll start Lantus after I see her. And, yes, it is scary with low blood sugars. The lowest my has ever gone is 35. Essentially, that is almost incompatible with life, it would, I imagine if it was prolonged. I have passed out during a hypoglycemic attack on more than one occasion and woke up to EMS. The time before last I knew it was coming hard and I could not consume carbs fast enough, and called EMS myself, before going down. That was weird. I didn't go to the hospital with them, though, because after it comes back up, I am basically okay, just weak. I would go if I didn't know why it happened. Lately I have been confused and wither forgot to eat or forgot to take my insulin, getting me in trouble. Also, both Zofran Elixir and Dilaudid Elixir are a glucose base. I need to call and find out how many carbs are per teaspoon, so I can cover those dosages. I have an appointment with the neuro-ophthalmologist this month so I will be getting a new Rx for glasses. That will help me see better. Right now even my baseline when my sugar is stable, things are blurry. Karyn E. , RN Exec. Guest guest
Karyn, It seems we are both having trouble....mine dropped to 35 in the middle of the night on Sunday and then again 32 last night before it was time for my nightly Lantus dosage. Very, very scary! I had problems like this it last week, too, so I dropped my Lantus dosage by 5 units last night and hope the change will make a difference. I hope you are doing better today....did you start on the Lantus, yet? With hope and prayers, Heidi Heidi H. Griffeth South Carolina SE & SW Regional Representative PAI, Intl. Guest guest
Candi, my readings are without medication!!! They took me off the day of the surgery. Of course it's only been 5 weeks, but I am happy to see them where they are. The doctors said though that this " cures " 95% of the patients with Diabetes (but more specifically Type II). I was diagnosed in 1996, and medications have controlled it. Both my brother and his son are very overweight, and both on Insulin now. I just couldn't face the future having to deal with it, if this surgery could help. I did ask though about heredity factors, and they said it does make a difference, so I'm being so careful. I don't want back on the medicine. The good news is that my dad and my aunt aren't taking medicine, controlled just by diet, and of course, neither is overweight. I'm hoping as you are that as more weight comes off it will help. I think your doctor is right, " once a diabetic, always a diabetic. " My readings have been so good, I've been testing only once in the morning. The told me 3xday, but my blood sugar lab test was 113, a little high, but the H1AC was perfectly normal. And I'm home from the store, and ready for a cup of SF hot cocoa! Heat yours up! Joan LAP RNY 11/18/03 Dr. Higa, Fresno, CA 282pre-op/275surg/243/140 RE: What makes you dump? Joan you are truly blessed!! You sugars are so good!!!! Are you getting those by diet alone? I am still in the 150-160 range. I don't have to take insulin every day but I still do on some days. My doctor feels that as my weight continues to improve it will get better and I will hopefully not need it anymore. But he did tell me (I was surprised by this) that once a diabetic always a diabetic. He told me that once you become resistant you will always be resistant. Not that if you stay alert you can't control it completely by diet and exercise but that you will never get a gold star saying " cured " and that is what I was hoping for. He did also tell me that Eventually I should no longer have to test several times a day but instead only when I am not feeling well which is an improvement. Count your blessings!!! Guest guest
Gosh that is wonderful Joan. I was never taken off. My guideline was nothing if I am under 150. So most days I don't take anything but when I creep over 150 I take a few units to bring me back down. Oh how I pray for the day I stay in the " normal " guidelines!!! Candi RE: What makes you dump? Guest guest
Candi, WOW, that cocoa was really good. It's been years and years since I tried diet stuff. At the time it was all yucky. This was excellent for a layback day, with hubby getting off 1/2 day, just enjoying the rain. Joan LAP RNY 11/18/03 Dr. Higa, Fresno, CA 282pre-op/275surg/243/140 RE: What makes you dump? Guest guest
Mandy, thanks for the recipe. I wrote it down, and am going to try it. I could have some on hand if I mix the dry ingredients, and when ready just scoop, add milk and vanilla.
