Mine feels as if I have a very large lump in my throat and it's almost impossible to swallow....even water. I don't know if it's windpipe, esophagus or trachea, but it darn sure hurts. Don't feel bad that your dermotologist didn't know about RP. I went to 5 different various kinds of specialist before finding one that had even heard of RP. Good luck! Love, T. Guest guest
Hi everyone, I haven't posted in a long time, I always read though. I am going for my plastic surgery on December 30 and have a question, I saw the surgeon Thursday and he gave me a form to go to the hospital to give my own blood in case it is needed when I am in surgery. I know that we were told once we have the gastric bypass we can never give blood again. This is going to be a seven hour surgery, and I do not want to be extra weak or deplete my levels of anything, I told him we were told we could never give blood again, I would have to find out. I know there are a lot of the people without giving blood that are very low on the iron and protein, etc., and to try to bring the levels up they have to have intervenes therapy, I do not want to do all that after or feel too week in my recovery. Can anybody give me some feedback on this, please. I had the MGB with DR. Rutledge in North Carolina in Jan of 2001 and have lost 105 lbs. I have to let them know by Tuesday because it is getting late to do all these things, if I have to give the blood I have to do it now. I need to go for my pretesting on the 24 and this would have to be done before I think. Thanks and keep my in your prayers, I am terrified. Guest guest
Rosemary, Lots of bariatric surgeons agree to disagree on the blood donation issue; mine says once you are at least a year out AND have had stable and satisfactory B-12 and iron panel lab results for 6 months you CAN donate blood. In a surgery situation like the one you face (and that I faced in July), an autologous donation (donating your own blood for your use later), would be OK with less-stellar blood test results. I wonder why your plastic surgeon thinks you'll lose so much blood though. I had five procedures in one 7hr 45min surgery and lost less than 150 ml of blood total. I asked my surgeon about doing the autologous donation and he said it wouldn't be necessary. Might be worth asking your ps how he anticipates you losing enough blood to need a transfusion, IMO. Guest guest
Rosemary, I have had surgery twice since my WLS in 1982. Both times I went to the hospital a couple of days ahead of time and gave a unit of blood for them to have on hand. But then, nobody ever told me that I couldn't or shouldn't. I never had any problem doing so. Good luck with your surgery!
