Hi Cathy,

Yes, I remember that awful taste. It is one of the more difficult

aspects of surgery. Especially if you are wired/tightly banded.

Having a splint makes it even worse. Although I was told I could

brush my teeth with a baby toothbrush, it didn't take long to

realize that I couldn't reach the inside of my mouth or under the

splint to get really clean. What is most likely making that taste

awful is " food " build up that isn't getting brushed out, and

probably dried blood/mucus, what I like to refer to as that

awful " gunk! " Never thought about the taste of " drilled bones " but

it is certainly a possibility. But no doubt, it's pretty nasty.

What worked for me was getting a waterpik. You may want to run it

past your surgeon as different surgeons have different opinions

about this. But if s/he approves the use of one, use it on the

lowest setting, squirting the water inside your mouth away from the

stitches (however, when the stitches start to break up and are

coming out on their own, I found the waterpik helpful in flushing

out some pieces that were ready to come out but weren't). Anyway,

fill the waterpik reservoir with water, and then add some (not a

whole lot) of the prescribed minty rinse your surgeon gave you and

that will be enough to keep your mouth fresh for a while. Brush

your teeth and then do this waterpik ritual after each " meal " or

drink. Yes, you will still have gunk that you can't brush off your

teeth and roof of your mouth, but that awful taste will be

diminished. But be warned, you will have to do this often. But it

helps. It made those first weeks so much more bearable for me.

And not to get gross, when you see some of the stuff being flushed

out of your mouth with the pic, there won't be any surprise why your

mouth feels so gross.

Hang in there and continued good healing!

mouth with water. At first I thought it was just because I need to

brush, but now I think it is the taste of drilled bones.....
