Guest guest
Thank you, , I seem to have missed the sad story. Hopefully, he will get better eventually, I wish him the best. BTW, regarding your question of the milk ban, even so Baylor hospital is a medical center and my surgeon is a professor in it, I am to pay over $5K out of pocket for the surgery having one of the best insurances in the USA, fully approved and covering all the aspects of the surgery - AFTER the insurance coverage. I assume for being so expensive he is not supposed to experiment on me by depriving me of my favorite product! Guest guest
Hi Val, You may get a shocker there, I don't know. My surgery was also done in a teaching hospital (Toronto General) and although my surgeon doesn't teach (he should, he's top notch and revered by his colleagues), I was somewhat taken aback when I read the consent form I had to sign a week before surgery, which basically gave them permission to have students present, even doing things under supervision. Luckily, it was during the summer, my nursing friend said about all the students might do is hold your mouth open. They didn't tell me he/she was going to stretch my lips all around a city block : ) Sounds like you've got a good surgeon lined up, even if he is a meanie about the milk ban. You going to ask him why? > > > > Hello, > > > > My advice is, contrary to most people on this site, to not get > > the > > > surgery > > > > done. > > > > There is too much risk and too much potential of pain afterwards > > > (I'm now 14 > > > > months post-op with lower jaw surgery and I'm in extreme pain > > all > > > day, every > > > > day). > > > > Mike
Guest guest
I would not mind students present but don't they dare even think about touching me - and I am going to state it explicitly! I hope my surgeon is half as good as he is expensive. The reason for no milk is the mucos production most likely as his secretary states - tubes interference - but I think it is well overblown for perfection. I could not speak to him, he is too famous and busy... Guest guest
A tip my nursing friend gave me was to ask to be introduced to everyone in the OR, but of course, they got busy attending to me right away, so I didn't get a chance. I didn't even see my surgeon (usually they come visit you in the holding tank, but I was so busy relieving my nervous bladder that I missed him!) - I did hear his voice saying hello as I was wheeled in, so I felt quite comfortable. They connected the IV, one of the nurses lectured me about the cassette player I had ( " it didn't take a shower with you this morning ... " ) but allowed me to keep it, the anaesthesiologist sprayed some yucky-tasting numbing stuff in my nostrils, and before you could say " No students please! " , I was out of it. 2 seconds later, I woke up in recovery ... Maybe you should think of wearing a t-shirt that says " Students may watch but not touch! " Can't fault a surgeon for wanting perfection, I guess. We all have to give up something to get through this. > I would not mind students present but don't they dare even > think about touching me - and I am going to state it > explicitly! Guest guest
I agree with what said here, Val, and while I respect Mike in his continuing efforts to warn others away from what has apparently been disastrous for him, I think it is also a bit unkind to frighten people who are already often scared, of something that most generally has given good results to patients who often were desperate for relief. However, what I think isn't important here. It's what YOU think and want, and the choices are indeed all yours. You might be reassured to know that Baylor's fame has previously spread to this board, too. I know of several people who had the surgery there, with and without students observing or participating, and can't think of one who was dissatisfied. In fact, the most glowing example was still raving about her results some years later, despite the fact that she did have some residual numbness. She felt the trade-off well worth the bargain. (She also had, best I remember, quite extensive work, dealing with a 10-12 mm overbite... among other problems.)
