Hello All,

Can anyone give me any information regarding wearing retainers after

getting braces off. The surgeon mentioned that i would probably need

them but he didn't go indepth about it and I'm wondering if anyone

has used them and for how long (and what exactly are they??)

thanks a lot

I went for permanent wires that are cemented to the backs of my

teeth. I didn't feel like wearing an appliance since they are easy

to forget or loose.

I have top and bottom perms. I like them actually after you get the

braces off your teeth kinda feel naked and skinny. So the retainer

keeps them in place.

He will probably give you the appliance kind, look on the internet

for a picture it will give you a better idea.

Hi,

You could have removeable retainers (wire or acrylic) or fixed wire

retainers. In the case of the former, the wire clips over one of your

rear molars, and runs around the inside of your teeth at the gumline.

Or if it's an acrylic retainer, it will resemble the invisalign type

braces and fit over your teeth.

The fixed wire retainers are little wires or chains that are bonded

to two teeth (upper or lower) and hold the arch of your front teeth

in place.

I have a fixed wire retainer on the lower, a removeable wire on the

upper. In about 2 weeks, I'll be getting a fixed wire retainer on the

upper, my ortho said something about &*#$^&^%^% adult teeth (one

tooth wouldn't stay in its place).

A former coworker here showed me her lower wire retainer - she was

told she could have it taken off after a couple of years, but she

said she didn't mind it, and was thinking of leaving it in

permanently. I will probably do the same, I want things to stay put!

Hope that helps,

I think the type of retainers can vary greatly. Personally, I have

an upper bonded retainer, which is basically a piece of wire glued

to the back of each of my top front four teeth, and a lower bonded

retainer, which is fixed to my lower front six teeth. I also have

an upper removable retainer I wear at night. Unless I have that in,

no one knows I have retainters at all. My orthodontist was the one

who make the calls on the retainers, so though your surgeon

mentioned it, you might want to bring it up to your orthodontist at

your next adjustment visit. If he's in a hurry you can always bite

him while he's in there - that'll get his attention and his fingers

out or your mouth : )

Okay - so I'm a little overcaffeinated this morning!!

With the permanent retainer, does it get in the way of flossing like

the normal braces do?

Mine does. But it doesn't get caught and shred like it does with

brackets, it's a smooth wire. Don't know what a chain retainer is

like. I also don't need to use special floss or threaders, except

for my bridge.

Once your teeth are straight, flossing is easier, even if the

retainer wire is in the way.

=well in a different way as they are behind the teeth.

It takes some getting used to and you can't pull DOWN or you can

break it right off. But its easier in some ways as there is less

hardware to get caught on.
