, you don't say how old you Dad is but my husband got Social Security Disability, which meant Medicare, at age 56. We have Hospice and it doesn't cost anything. Medicare pays them.

Ginger, my brother was told he would not quality for Medicare until he turns 65 even though he has been approved for Social Security Disablity beginning in October. I'm not doubting you, but I'm wondering why he would have been told this. Is anyone else receiving Medicare benefits (not Medicaid) on disability before age 65?

Regards,

I just went to the Social Security web information page, and I was surprised

to see that the 24 month waiting period for Medicare is waived if you have

ALS

(Lou Gehrigs Disease). I suppose this is due to the degenerative and

progressive nature of ALS, which causes me to wonder why MSA isn't equally

exempt from the 24 month wait. Aren't the life expectancy and progression

rates of both diseases relatively similar?

After two years on Disability, you can qualify for Medicare.

It may be a state thing. Leo was told he could have Social Security Disability til age 65 and then regular SSI. And there was a waiting period but not 2 years. He had long term disability that paid until Soc Sec. Dis. started and now they both pay, not equal. And as soon as he got Soc. Sec. Dis. medicare started. It's been 6 yrs and I dont' remember all the details. Ginger

Jerry,

Once you receive SSDI, you can get Medicare (for only the disabled person) two

years later. There are no conditions except that you are still disabled (and

they check to see if you are still disabled every few years). I think it was

automatic, but you should check on that. Charlotte received SSDI in October

1995 and Medicare in October 1997 (at 58 years of age).

You have a four month waiting period after proof of disability until you

actually get your first SSDI check and it will be retroactive only to after the

four month waiting period. I don't think the spouse can get spousal benefits

from the SSDI itself unless they are over retirement age themself and/or have no

income. I did not get anything from Charlotte's as I have a retirement of my

own and it is over the allowance.

Hope this helps, Bill Werre

Jerry,

Perhaps this is a state by state deal on Medicare, because Deborah has only

to wait one year. We live in North Carolina..

Jerry,

Having just FOUGHT wiht SSD, your Medicare benefits should begin two years after you begin to receive payments. Check their web site for more info.
