Guest guest
I'm almost three weeks post-up(Wednesday) and am still having problems with pain in my jaws. Falling asleep is not the problem, but when I wake up, I have this ache in my bottom jaw as well as my joints. Whether I wake up in the morning or from a nap, it feels as if I have this heavy weight at the bottom of my jaw. I had upper/lower/genio. I'm sure that did a number on my joints as they are probably trying to adjust to the new bite, but it's so annoying. My doc gave me elavil to help me sleep, but I'm still waking up to this pain. He says long term advice would be to do more jaw excersices but I hope this pain isn't forever. Anyone have similar problems or any advice to help? I am sleeping propped with pillows. -T
Guest guest
I'm 5 weeks post-op and I too wake up with sore jaws each morning. My os said it's probably due to the rubber bands (?). My theory is that I must be clenching my teeth in my sleep. Also, the pressure of lying on my jaw all night probably adds to it. Mine goes away in about 20 minutes and is more " discomfort " now, but in the beginning the pain would wake me up like an alarm clock to take my meds. No advice, but for me, there's been a big improvement from week 3 to 5. Hope its the same for you! > I'm almost three weeks post-up(Wednesday) and am still having > problems with pain in my jaws. Guest guest
that happened to me too... that is, i was waking up with pain in my jaws for weeks after the surgery. but now that i'm almost two months post-op, i haven't noticed any pain in the mornings. which is a totally new thing b/c i used to wake up with pain even before the surgery. things are going to hurt - you had your jaws broken and not to mention the muscles are having to learn a new position. you've been through a lot physically and your body is healing. give it time... take care, heather > > I'm almost three weeks post-up(Wednesday) and am still having > > problems with pain in my jaws. Guest guest
Hi T I am four weeks post op (Wednesday), upper, lower and palatal split. I too wake early in the morning about 4am with aching - not piercing pain - but enought to keep me awake. I try and hold off until 6am and then go and take some painkiller. I am still sleeping fairly upright but now try to sleep on my side - I'm comfortable for a while but then I start feeling pressure in the side of my face so I think that is a contributory factor. I think we are bound to still be hurting to some degree or other - so I try to remain philosophical about it. As yet I haven't been advised to do any sort of jaw exercise, although the amount of talking I've been doing, catching up with friends from whom I hid for the first week or so, should be quite enough! Talking and laughing are still hard - I have had to put down funny books and walk out on comedies cos' I couldn't control myself! Can I ask if your sinuses are still bunged up. Although my nose doesn't feel terribly blocked I feel and sound very nasal. I think coughing up those nasty blood clots has just about ceased. I have not been banded although I am about to start - I should have started last week but the guy who took out my splint speared the inside of my lip which then ulcerated and I couldn't bear touching my lip so I figured a wait wouldn't hurt. I know my ortho is not too fussed. Sorry, this is not really advice, more commiseration, but at least you now know you're not alone! Guest guest
Hi Sue! I only have one rubber band in the front of my braces that I wear at night. When the OS put one on each side to hold my jaws together, it felt more stable and I actually had less jaw pain until he took it out the next week. I think he took them out to allow my jaws to get used to moving on their own. I had no sinus problems after surgery and have been breathing through my nose fine. I guess I got lucky. Although I am currently having issues with my lips and trying to feel normal again. I feel like I'm talking behind a mask and when I try to smile everything is so tight. I still have some swelling in my cheeks and this still makes me self conscious and not wanting to go out in public. I also still have some bruising. I guess it takes time to heal and I'm hoping the pains will go away as the muscles and joints get used to the new jaw position. Well good luck to ya! -T > > > Hi T > > I am four weeks post op (Wednesday), upper, lower and palatal > split.
