Ginger,

You say that your husband has hospice and that Medicare pays for it all. What

does it involve. Does hospice mean 24/7 care by someone in your home of the

patient? My father has Medicare which pays for 80% of all hospital related

expenses. His secondary insurance, Oxford pays for the supplemental costs

(after a great deal of struggle of course). But I pay for his full time care

giver. It is appalling that there is no way to pay for home health care through

insurance...unless of course one has LTC, which no one even thought about 20

years ago. How is everyone managing the expenses.....help!!!

Hi Simone,

Hospice sends a nurse 2 times a week to check patients condition and bring

meds and supplies. There is always someone on call for emergencies, and a

nurse will come anytime for emergencies. An aide comes 3 times a week for

bathing, shaving etc. She changes sheets, bacically any small housekeeping

stuff you ask her to do. They have volunteer sitters available, a social

worker and a minister.

You have to meeet certain criteria and someone mentioned before-

" six months to live " We have been with Hospice 17 months now. But the Dr.

thought we should get in the program, so we are. Hope that answers your

questions - if you have more, please ask.
