Carol,

Agree. Wonder if our group has a member who knows anyone in the ALS support

community who may know the what/why/when of this change in the waiting

period so that we don't have to reinvent the wheel?

Medicare waiting period

Jerry,

I don't know the answer about the ALS exception, but I do know that this is

a recent happening. I think the ALS group has recently gotten more focused

and essentially lobbied congress and got this done. The 24 month waiting

period has always baffled me -- if you can't work because you're too sick,

how are you supposed to pay for medical care? I don't get it!

This is one of those " squeaky wheel gets the grease " things, and I

personally think we need to make some more noise. Anybody up for some

lobbying activity? Moeller, isn't this up your alley? I think if we

put some effort into this we could get it done.

Carol & Rob (who thinks Carol is at it again!)

Congress Waives 24-month Medicare Waiting Period

December 15, 2000 - the United States Senate and House of Representatives

voted to waive the current 24-month waiting period for Medicare coverage of

people diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS), as part of the fiscal year

2001 spending bill (H.R. 4577) for labor, health and human services, and

education. This is an historic victory for the ALS community

Jerry,

I don't know anybody, but I would certainly be willing to send off an email

or call them and ask. I find that most groups like this are willing to

share information on how they get things like this done. Also, every

politician knows that when you set a precedent like they did with ALS others

are bound to follow.

Pam, that's like getting a compliment on a dress you bought at a yard sale

-- just accept the compliment and fail to mention to it came from a yard

sale. No one will be the wiser! :-)
