Guest guest
I am a 16 years old and am getting lower jaw surgery for an underbite in one month. I most definitely do NOT want to get this surgery (cried all the way home from the oral surgeon yesterday lol). I am most upset by the fact that I will be numb for at least 3 months. I thought the numbness I experienced after my wisdom teeth removal was plenty and that lasted only about 2 days. I am really scared for the pain as well. Can anyone who has had a similar surgery tell me what things are really like post-op conerning numbness and pain. Thanks
Guest guest
Maybe you'll be numb, and maybe you won't. And it's unlikely that anybody knows how long you'll be numb, if you are. I had an overbite, not an underbite, and I had no numbness that I was aware of, anyhow. I did have surgery on the lower jaw. I didn't have a lot of pain, either. I did use the painkillers my doc prescribed for me. It is not unusual to be frightened ahead of time, believe me. Almost all of us have been. But most of us also have realized, at least once we got through the recovery (if we had trying times there) that we really needn't have been so frightened. I hope you will feel the same way. I do worry, though, about a patient who's undergoing a procedure he or she " most definitely does NOT want. " Is it that you don't want it NOW, or that you don't think there's a problem that needs fixing, or what? Do your parents know how you feel? (I'm guessing that they do, given that you cried all the way home.) ;~) If it makes you feel any better, and I hope it will, I -- at age 55 - - cried all the way home from my ortho's office when he first told me I needed the surgery, too. But honest, it wasn't that bad for me. And later I discovered that there are soo many people out there who are desperate to have these operations and have to fight insurance companies like crazy to get the coverage. I came to feel that anyone (in the U.S. anyhow) who needs it and can manage to get it paid for is truly, truly fortunate. Guest guest
hey.. im 15 years old and i had lower jaw surgery last month on the 7th. i was just like you i cried all the way to and from the oral surgeon when i had my pre-op visits i was so scared and just didnt want to have the surgery. but after the surgery everything for me went great. the swelling is a big shock and the numbness does suck a little but its really not that bad and it mite not take 3 months to go away for some its about a month my numbness is almost gone. the worst thing for me was having my mouth wired shut not being able to talk or eat anything for 2 weeks. do u have to be wired shut? also, i was in hardly in any pain at all most of it was just discomfort. if you have any other questions about anything let me know. you'll be happy with the results after everything though! kirsten
