Bilingual Board meetings

Like and Yakima Valley Farmworkers Clinic, we too bought equipment

(headsets for participants, microphone for the interpreter) for simultaneous

interpretation. It's quiet and inobtrusive and very popular with all our

Board members,Eng- and Sp- speakers alike. The only people who don't use

them are who speak both languages fluently; otherwise, both the

English-speakers and the Spanish-speakers need them and the interpretation

goes in both directions.

We have a half-time translator/interpreter whose job description also

includes Board support. He translates all agendas, minutes and narrative

documents for the Board meetings, prepares Board packets, makes reminder

calls, conveys information by phone to Board members who don't use e-mail,

and is the simultaneous interpreter at the meetings. He's thus a trusted

" point person " for the Board, esp. so for the Spanish-speaking Board

members. His other time is chiefly spent translating letters to patients

and documents requested by the clinicians.
