Guest guest
I may be entering new phase with MSA effects. In last three out of four nights, Terry has leaked in bed - the first two were small fecal ones ant the third one was urine. It is to early to tell if this is a new phase or not as there were extenuating circumstances that might explain the leaks. Time will tell. In any event, I remember not long ago where someone described a neat solution to providing a moisture barrier between the mattress pad and the mattress that did not allow the other bed linens to slip around and/or move. Would appreciate any tips in this area. I hope this is not a new phase, but thanks to the list I am not surprised. Guest guest
, Fecal incontinence can be a problem. Is it loose? If so, she may be impacted as constipation is the " norm " for MSA. If it is table tennis ball size hard balls, that is sort of " normal " for MSA. Sounds as if you are getting to the adult " brief " stage. The ones made by Depends and others look like large diapers and have the tape closures, work well. For many years Charlotte had to use them night and day. During the day, the Wal-Mart Assurance brand worked well and 4-5 per day worked well for daytime use (the Depends were better 3-4 would work, but much more expensive). Depends (their large was a bit small for Charlotte) and the national brand in the blue package (Assure?) were much better for overnight use. Poise pads added can help. There are disposable bed pads in a couple of sizes and here the Depends are MUCH better and worth the extra money. Wal-Mart carried and extra large pad which covered a lot of the bed. Good luck with this phase of MSA. Guest guest
My husband's needs are probably much farther along than erry's, but this info might help you. We use some pads that we purchase from some of the mail order catalogs that you get in the mail. They are slightly padded, lined with vinyl. I use them under the sheet and again on top of the sheet in an attempt to cut down on bed changes. If they have urine, I throw them into washer on hot/hot water with detergent and some Oxyiclean. They go in drier. If they are some soiled with fecal matter, I clean off as much as I can into commode and then wash them twice as described aove. The drier does not seem to bother them. Some of ours are 10 years old, because we first got them for a a grandchild who had difficulities in bed wetting. The pads we use came from a mail order company. 1-. Dr. Leonard's #95042 Bed Pad, size 29X35, price $9.99 or 2 for $17.99 Hope this info helps. Marilyn in TN
Guest guest
Bill, Carol, Vera, and Marilyn: Thanks for all your prompts comments on this subject yesterday. All were helpful and from different perspectives. In my original email, I used the term " leaking. " Actually, spotting would have been more accurate for the fecal incidents and it was more than " leaking " for the urine incident. All three incidents may have been one time events due to unique circumstances just prior to each of the events. Only, time will tell. We made out fine last night. For the future, depends and lined pads will probably be the order of the day. I did learn one thing from a very helpful clerk in Bed Bath and Beyond which may be worth passing on. Mattress covers today are generally designed to NOT provide a wrap around water proof barrier. The barrier is only on the top horizontal surface. This is for two reasons. First, newer mattresses do not have to be flipped periodically; thus, the top always remains the top. Second, the intent is to allow the mattress to breathe. The latter means the sides of the mattress are not protected from liquids. What I did here was to use a vinyl lined pad, like the one described by you all, to wrap the edge of the mattress under the mattress cover described below. Speaking of mattress pads, the one that I have is really nice for body breathing; we are not even aware there is a vinyl barrier under it. It is a regular fabric pad - quite comfortable - that has a vinyl liner attached to the underside, but only for the horizontal surface of the pad. That is, the sides are exposed and that is where the leakage penetrated in the urine incident as Terry was sitting on the edge of the bed when it occurred. I had found this mattress pad earlier also in Bed Bath and Beyond. Again, thanks for your help. Sennewald Charlottesville, Virginia
Guest guest
Ann: And a third one: , I got the pads we use from Bed Bath and Beyond. I think they were about $12 a piece. They launder well, too. Did you get the waterproof mattress pad there? If so, I may try one -- seems like a good idea if it's comfortable for both of us.
