Guest guest
Just a quick post to the pre-op patients out there. I had a reminder today that the pain associated with this surgery (upper/lower/cheek implants in my case) is not that bad. Seven weeks post-op today, I went to my beloved dentist to see why one of my molars had been hurting like crazy anytime I drank anything remotely cool. Little did I know that I'd be walking out with a root canal an hour and a half later. To make sure the nerve was really shot (before deciding whether a root canal was necessary), he did his usual test--holding a pencil-shaped piece of ice against the side of my tooth at the gumline. I can honestly say that that hurt worse than anything related to the surgery (actually worse than anything I've experienced except childbirth)! Actually, even the novocaine (sp?) shots they give you before-hand hurt worse than any post-surgical pain I had. Hope that reassures some of you with surgeries coming up! --Amy P.S. Going to the dentist was hilarious. The folks in his office have watched my progression through this whole braces/surgery thing with great interest as the dentist is the one who set me on this path. Every single person who works in the office (about 12) had to come over and stare at my face today--I felt like a science project. After all their compliments, I left feeling like a million bucks! P.P.S. Congratulations on your milestone ! May I recommend Kraft Mac 'N Cheese (yes, the good old blue box) for your next meal? I ate an entire box in one sitting once I was cleared to chew. I've never tasted anything so fantastic (until the pizza that I was finally able to eat today!).
Guest guest
Hi Amy- And congrats to you on 7 weeks...WOW! Sorry that you needed a root- canal, but I totally agree with you about the pain. 4 weeks and so far, the only pain was due to headaches, etc. Funny that you should mention the dentist, because I was having a tooth ache last week, and I believed it to be one of the rear/upper banded teeth. My OS said there was nothing to be done now, but the pain went away, so hopefully it was nothing. If not, I'm sure I'll have to have it taken care of once I get the green flag. You must be a mindreader...last night's dinner consisted of mashed potatoes AND Kraft Mac & Cheese, and it tasted WONDERFUL. So glad to hear you're doing well, and I'm sure we'll both only get better and better. Take care. - > Just a quick post to the pre-op patients out there. Guest guest
Yep, I've been through well over a six-pack of macaroni & cheese in the past month or so. I had set eating pizza as a huge milestone in my head, and I ate SIX slices yesterday (and had it for lunch again today...) I still have trouble chewing things like beef or snow peas (found that out the hard way last night), but as long as I have pizza.... I'm glad your toothache went away. The dentist really thought mine was just orthodontic pain, but the cold sensitivity is apparently a giveaway. If someone had told me before the surgery that I'd be able to open wide enough for a root canal 7 weeks later, I would have been shocked. My jaw is a little sore today from holding it open, but one Advil is plenty. So bizarre that I was more traumatized by routine dental work than major surgery. Are you glad you had the surgery? I'm thrilled--I LOVE looking in the mirror now, and being able to cchew normally for the first time in 15 years is kind of nice too! It is a little weird having people not recognize me though. Glad you're doing well! --Amy > > Just a quick post to the pre-op patients out there.
