Guest guest
hi all... i just visited my ortho today for the first time since my surgery (two months). and he seemed very pleased with how my jaws are lined up. he still has some work on my upper teeth (i just have some gaps) and my bite still is not completely closed in the front. anyway... he said that even if i get my braces off soon, he'll still want to watch me for several months to make sure i don't relapse. this is something i hadn't even thought of happenning. is this a common occurence? is there anything i can do/not do to lower my chances of a relapse??? even though i had an easy time of the surgery, i certainly don't want to have to go through it again! any input on this would be appreciated. Guest guest
Relapses are not common, but there have been some. I think open bites are the hardest to hold, from what I've read. Out of all the thousands of people's posts I've read, I'd guess that I've seen, uh, maybe 20, maybe 30 -- and I've been here, I think, since about 2001 or so. What can you do to avoid having one? Sometimes nothing. But for sure you can do exactly what your surgeon and ortho tell you, and for another, be sure you understand what they are telling you to do. If they tell you to wear the danged elastics 24/7, do it. If they tell you 7 hours a day, do it. If they want you to have Kangaroos and little Debbies criscrossed back and forth, do it. If something seems odd or off, call the office and ask. best, Cammie Most people do not relapse, thank goodness! > hi all... i just visited my ortho today for the first time since my > surgery (two months). and he seemed very pleased with how my jaws > are lined up. he still has some work on my upper teeth (i just have > some gaps) and my bite still is not completely closed in the front. > anyway... he said that even if i get my braces off soon, he'll still > want to watch me for several months to make sure i don't relapse. > this is something i hadn't even thought of happenning. is this a > common occurence? is there anything i can do/not do to lower my > chances of a relapse??? even though i had an easy time of the > surgery, i certainly don't want to have to go through it again! any > input on this would be appreciated. Guest guest
thanks for the input! i'll be in elastics for another month at least, but fortunately i only have to wear them at night. i've been religious about everything my surgeon has had me to and i'm sure i'll be that way with my ortho. i personally felt like my lower jaw was off kilter so i mentioned something to my ortho and he said he didn't see it. i guess i'm just really paranoid after all the trouble, pain and expense i've been through. its good to know that my chances are low, but i guess i need to keep it down as a possibility if for no other reason than to kick my butt into obeying the ortho and OS, like you mentioned. thanks again! heather > > hi all... i just visited my ortho today for the first time since my > > surgery (two months). and he seemed very pleased with how my jaws > > are lined up. he still has some work on my upper teeth (i just > have > > some gaps) and my bite still is not completely closed in the > front. > > anyway... he said that even if i get my braces off soon, he'll > still > > want to watch me for several months to make sure i don't relapse. > > this is something i hadn't even thought of happenning. is this a > > common occurence? is there anything i can do/not do to lower my > > chances of a relapse??? even though i had an easy time of the > > surgery, i certainly don't want to have to go through it again! > any > > input on this would be appreciated. Guest guest
I am scheduled to have upper/lower/genio on June 7th for an open bite and a relapse was a concern to me, too. After speaking to my surgeon, she explained that she is going to overcorrect my bite, in case I relapse. My open bite is due to tongue thrusting so I will have a habit-breaking appliance to hopefully prevent it from occuring again. I'm not sure if you have an open bite, but I hope this is helpful! Guest guest
i do have an open bite. thanks for your input. when i was at the ortho y'day, they showed me pics of my teeth b/f the braces were put on. i had forgotten how bad it was. i want to try and get copies so i can post them here. i realize i just have to put my trust in my doctors and yet at the same time maintain realistic expectations. i don't want to have surgery again, but it doesn't do me any good worrying about it. plus, if i NEVER relapse then i would have wasted all this time worrying over nothing. so i'll just take it as it comes. for now, i'm very pleased with how i'm moving along and i'm looking forward to getting my braces off soon. the ortho thinks it won't be too long. i might be free before the end of the summer (fingers crossed). anyway, rambling... > I am scheduled to have upper/lower/genio on June 7th for an open > bite and a relapse was a concern to me, too.
