I'm a 28 year old that's 14 days post-op for a surgically assisted

rapid maxillary expansion. I performed my last crank last night and

they put my arch wire back in this morning. I now have about a 7mm

gap between my two front teeth that looks really really goofy. How

long till this thing closes? My ortho says that they don't want to

move it too fast so I don't have any power-chains on. He told me over

a month. Is it really that long for everyone? Could anyone that had

this done post the time that it took to close theirs? I need hope.

Anyways I'm super glad that I don't have to crank that mid-evil device

anymore!

Thanks,

ny

I know how you feel. I had my SARPE in February and that big gap was

not a welcomed treat. My ortho put my braces on roughly a month after

surgery, so I've had my braces on for nearly 2 months and the gap is

now almost completely closed. I have had powerchains on since the

day my braces went on and I feel like they definitely helped close

things up quicker. My expander comes out in a few weeks - devil be

gone!! =)

My orthodontist plans to use braces and the expander at the same time.

He says that will keep the gap from appearing. The surgeon says I need to wear

the braces a little before the surgery anyway to get more room between the roots

of my front teeth. Any thoughts?

Only that your ortho, I trust, has trained well and knows what he's

doing. Every case is different, I reckon. If your guy can do it this

way, so much the better for you!

Good wishes.
