Guest guest
I have been reading some posts and looking at websites about this type of surgery, and I was wondering about the age that surgery on the lower jaw is generally done at. I read on a website, that surgery on the lower jaw is usually not carried out untill the patient is an adult, and the lower jaw is the last bone to stop growing. If this is true, then, when could I expect to get surgery, since I am 17; i was hoping for surgery next summer, although I havnt had the chance to disscuss this surgery and when it will be with my orthodontist, as I have only had 2 appointments with him in the last year! I do know what the responce will be though, which is that x-rays are carried out to determine if you have stopped growing, (it might just be me, but I think that my lower jaw is getting bigger, although that could just be noticing it more?). Also, another quick question, does your orthodontist and surgeon disscuss with you, what you want to look like, and what you think about the way you look at the moment to help decide on the best position for the jaw(s)? Hope this made some sense to you all.
Guest guest
I just had the surgery (upper and lower) at 34. My lower jaw kept growing well into my mid and late 20s, and my surgeon says I would have had to have the surgery again if I had had it as a teenager as my then-ortho suggested. I don't think that's a normal case, though. I think most lower jaw growth is finised by 18 or 19, with boys taking a little longer than girls. My sister had jaw surgery it at 17 and has not grown since then (that we know of). > I have been reading some posts and looking at websites about this > type of surgery, and I was wondering about the age that surgery on > the lower jaw is generally done at.
