Guest guest
Hi Sharon, this is a major decision. For me it has been wonderful. It's only been 3-1/2 weeks, and I feel so good. I feel like I'm ready to take on the world. Aches and pains are disappearing, and I'm off so many medications. What are the reasons you decided to do this? Take a good look at them. Maybe the consult will give you more insight. Joan lap RNY 11/18/03 Dr. Higa, Fresno, CA 282/249/
Guest guest
nice to have ya onboard, sharon. you'll get a kinda biased opinion here. i (we) are experiencing a new life, free from the extra weight. wouldn't give up the past 19 months for anything. even if it meant giving up a problem (or two) directly caused by wls. lori h. > My name is Sharon and I have my 1st consult with my Dr. on 13 Jan. Guest guest
I am new to this group, and I would like to ask a few questions. I have an underbite, and I would like to know what the recovery time is on average for lower jaw surgery only compaired to upper and lower? Also, how long did you have fixed braces on, both before and after the surgery? Am, I right in thinking that I may have to take 2 weeks or more of university in order to recover from this type of op.? Thanks, Em.
Guest guest
Hi Em, I had upper/lower/genio for an overbite/overjet/retrognathic lower jaw. Not quite what you are having, but I can give you some answers that may help. I had a really easy recovery, my surgery was only 3.5 hours in length. I had no pain (pain in this type of procedure is usually just discomfort, like sore muscles), minimal swelling, and I was up walking the wards about 5-6 hours after my surgery. I felt a bit weak, and later when we got home (I was in hospital for 2 nights), I found the tiredness kicked in. I couldn't really do much for very long. Even the pace of my 70+ parents visiting after 2 weeks was too much for me at times. But I was still having a good recovery, no problems, really. Yes, I drooled a lot, I had the runs for 2 days after the week of liquid diet, I was numb from behind my eyeballs to my chin, couldn't talk at all at first, then not for very long periods (think very short sentences), but that was pretty much expected, rather funny, actually, and not a big deal to me. I thought I would be ok to go back to work after 2 weeks of recovery, I never get sick and am in good health, other than some low back pain that started to bother me when I started my ortho treatment. I told my cranial massage therapist about going back to work after 2 weeks, and she said " Don't try to be Superwoman. You need at least 4 weeks " . So I went to my boss and told him that I had read from these groups that 3 weeks was about the average, for what I was having done, but that I'd never had major surgery before, and I didn't know how I'd fare. That I might be back sooner than that, or later than that. Then I talked with my surgeon, told him my job was stressful (it can be, I'm an accounting manager for a company that has some pretty strict financial reporting deadlines), and he said " it takes 6-8 weeks for the bones to properly heal, I can sign off for more " (more than the 3 weeks he usually recommends). My insurance company actually approved 6 weeks, but I went back at 5 weeks because I had a reporting deadline that I was unable to train anyone else to do. At six weeks, I did some major overtime, and it really did a number on my body. My mouth swelled up inside, I got all trembly and weak, and basically left work to zonk out on the couch for 3 days to recover. What I'm basically saying is that you will find out that you just can't order your body to get back to normal in a prescribed period of time. You'll find that you're weak from lack of nutrition, swelling may come & go, cleaning & eating takes a long time, and even just talking will wear you out. You may be able to go back after 2 weeks, but you'll need to be prepared that you may not look or feel 100% back to normal for some time. Patience and acceptance of your situation is really the key here, along with a healthy dose of humour (I felt like a baby, weak and helpless at times, and especially when re-learning how to eat and drink, with all the drooling, etc.) I hope that helps, > I am new to this group, and I would like to ask a few questions. > I have an underbite, and I would like to know what the recovery time > is on average for lower jaw surgery only compaired to upper and lower? > Also, how long did you have fixed braces on, both before and after > the surgery? > Am, I right in thinking that I may have to take 2 weeks or more of > university in order to recover from this type of op.? > Thanks, > Em.
