Guest guest
Maybe we should have a separate link for this, but meanwhile can everyone share what worked well in the medication/blended food environment? Thanks, Val
Guest guest
Fresh fruit, especially watermelon, which unfortunately didn't blend well for me. It stayed stringy. Drinking lots of water and getting enough fiber is also important. Guest guest
If you want something liquid for constipation, prune juice fits the bill. Also Ensure with fibre.
Guest guest
Prune juice is the classic suggestion. Also, bananas blended into a shake help with fiber... There's also an Ensure that comes with extra fiber... Guest guest
Thanks, Cammie. Did you try Ensure with fiber - does it work? Guest guest
Val, I used prune juice (tastes yucky) and also Ensure with fiber to try to avoid constipation. At the end of the first week I had the runs for 2 days, which was Not Fun (we only have 1 bathroom in our house). Cheryl (checsmia) advised me to stop both. The same may not happen to you, but if it does, I recommend Extra Strength Kaopectate to curb it. I'm not saying don't do Ensure with fibre, or prune juice, just be prepared in case they work too well : < > > > > Maybe we should have a separate link for this, but meanwhile > > > > can everyone share what worked well in the medication/blended > food > > > > environment? > > > > Thanks, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Val
Guest guest
There is a wonderful herbal tea called Smooth Move (aptly named) it is made by Traditional medicinals teas (yogi teas has one also called laxtea I believe). Both of these teas are excellent, taste good and are very soothing, drink one cup at night and you will go to the b- room in the morning guaranteed. They can be purchased in the organic section of the supermarket or at Whole Foods (if you have one near) or even in health food stores. I have always found this much easier and more agreeable than prune juice, thoug you still need to make certain you get enough fiber in your diet. Guest guest
Not that it's any help to someone on a liquid or soft diet, but I recently found a product called " Bowel Buddy " bran wafers (sold by Zehrs grocery stores, developed by Abundance Marketing in Stoney Creek, Ontario). They are insoluble fibre (I think most of the supplements like Metamucil or things you add to water are soluble fibre, which acts differently), which helps to stimulate the bowel's natural peristaltic action. Not just a laxative, which gets stuff moving, but something that does a good cleaning as it moves (sorry if anybody is eating while reading this!!!!). I found out about this stuff recently while investigating my dad's problem - he had undiagnosed diverticulitis disease, had to have emergency surgery about 5 weeks ago and was about 2 hours away from dying (according to the surgeon) if they hadn't done it when they did. Apparently there are relatively few symptoms to this sort of thing, but it's quite common after a certain age. Your gramma was right when she told you to eat lots of bran. > There is a wonderful herbal tea called Smooth Move (aptly named) it > is made by Traditional medicinals teas (yogi teas has one also called > laxtea I believe). Guest guest
There's also an item called psyllium, which is usually in ingredient in fiber things like Metamucil, but which you can buy straight at health food stores. It's basically the husk of some plant, completely insoluable, and it scrubs you out well. The only problem is it's kind of icky to drink. Mixing it with applesauce works much better. Could you crumble up your bran wafers, applesauce them, and squirt them in?
