Cutting and pasting

It'd be nice if you could just cut and paste the pertinent parts of the

messages, when you are replying.

I've noticed this past week that the length of the email digests are

increadibly long, due to folks copying the ENTIRE text of messages they

are

replying to.

Bobbie,

I couldn't agree more! I believe this gets mentioned every so often and

I have no idea why people don't want to comply with this simple request

to make life a little easier when reading this list. This past week or

so it has been even worse than usual and since prior requests to cut and

paste have fallen on deaf ears so many times before, I kept quiet.

Thanks for bringing this up again (I feel like I am the only one

perturbed by this!), although I don't have much faith that people will

heed the advice.

Those who don't read digest mode have no idea what you're talking about, because

it's much easier to either read the emails one at a time (with a rule to stick

them all in one folder), or to read them from the website (no mail). With the

constant stream of newbies we have here, I don't understand why the digest

readers don't post a friendly reminder once a month instead of whining about it

periodically; people not reading digest are not going to just guess what they

need to do to make things work better.

Also, note that with the message below, a classic cut-and-paste problem has

popped up... I trimmed of the extra message text, but then the person on the

" from " line is no longer the author; Bobbie was the writer but her address

information is gone due to the cutting done by Sharon. Sometimes people are

afraid to cut things out because of the attribution problems that can result.

That said, I've been on distribution lists since listservs were invented, and

since day one, people reading digest have ALWAYS complained about people quoting

entire messages. I think if you choose to read digest, to some extent, you're

going to have to accept that there will be extraneous stuff in there that you

have to ignore.

I don't mind so much when there is an entire message copied to a post...but

it is when you have digest and the entire digest is copied...you have to go

through the entire thing...like 25 messages that you already read in a

previous digest to get back to say..for instance..message 3....that is a

major irritant...because I have to download the digest when normally I don't

have to. It all takes up time and space on my computer..and those that don't

have digest, I don't think understand what we are talking about. The worst

case scenario is when several people do this, and there are digests imbedded

within digests...100's of messages within one digest...and stuff we've

already read...already!! it's enough to make you crazy. It would just be so

simple to omit the full digest from the post. Only display the message you

are answering, or the pertinent part of that message if you will. But, I

too, think I am talking to the wall.

Yes, this particular problem IS caused by digest readers....don't put the

shoe on if it doesn't fit....it isn't YOU that is being flogged....in fact no

one is...it's just quite discouraging when this happens, and I don't think

people realize what they are doing when they do it. If digest readers could

just delete each post before having to sort through..it would be easy....so

guess there is the downside of getting the list via digest...but there is no

other way I can get this list...I'd be really overwhelmed. Sometimes when I

see it must be downloaded..I just delete the whole thing...and miss a lot of

good stuff.

To me comments like this is what makes one feel as though they are getting

" flogged " .........insinuating that someone just doesn't care or worse yet is

" trying " to irritate is a rather argumentative suggestion in my

book...particularly when it is pretty clear that the majority of people

(myself included) have no idea what the heck it is you are talking about.

And not only that, some people (myself included AGAIN) may simple be too

puter illiterate to do know how to do what it is that you are

suggesting!!!!!!!!!! P.

I personally apologize if you felt " flogged " by any comment I made..it

certainly was not intended. I have held my breath, jumped in with both feet

and gotten myself off digest...since the problem is bigger than the digest is

worth, I think. My comments may be more timely too, so maybe I am doing

myself and everyone a favor.
