Hi, I was wondering if anyone has had bridges put in during the

course os orthodontic treatment.

How do the bridges work with fixed braces? Do they move with the

other teeth or what? I dont get the bridges till July, it was

supposed to be this month, but they couldnt get them made in time,

and the next available app. was in July!

Thanks.

Gosh, I had my bridge taken out when I got braces, so I wonder what

they're doing to you! I was told that the bridge would not allow the

teeth to move properly, so they split it apart and took out the

middle tooth and kept the crowns on the adjacent teeth. I now have

a " pontic " or fake tooth in between. All is well and my teeth are

getting straighter and straighter.

Now, my bridge was in the front of my mouth, so maybe that's why it

needed to be removed. Perhaps your bridge is in the back and those

teeth won't be braced.

Have I helped out all or am I just rambling? Sorry!

Hi squiggles_bug,

I started out with a crown/bridge/crown combo (which is what you're

talking about). Your ortho can attach brackets to this, but if they

are porcelain, he or she will need special porcelain glue to get

them to adhere properly. Basically they can't do anything with the

bridge combo, they have to work around it. I told my ortho on more

than one occasion that he had my permission to demolish the bridge

if it got in his way, same for my surgeon. They managed ok. Post-

op, it wasn't until my braces were removed that I could do anything

about the bridge. It had been designed for my old crummy bite (there

was quite a large gap post-op, so I could only macro-chew on that

side for months), and it was to be replaced with a new one that fit

my new bite. Luckily there was sufficient tooth remaining under the

crowns for my dentist to fit a new one. It's important to go back

and see your ortho right away if you have your bridge replaced as

he'll want to check your bite (mine was worried that my dentist

would leave it too high, but as it turned out, it was just fine).

I'd be sure and ask more questions about it. Mine couldn't be

adjusted along with my other teeth, but maybe it's part of your

ortho's plan.

I didnt think that they could have bridges with a fixed brace. The

bridges will be in place of my canine teeth. Prevously when I had a

fixed brace on my top teeth, I just had gaps were the canines are

meant to be. Just now I have a retainer with " fake " teeth attached to

it to fill in the gaps. I am going to have to get a fixed brace back

on, to get my teeth in place for surgery, although maybe my top teeth

are fine were they are, and they just have to move the bottom teeth.

Maybe I wont be getting fixed braces for a while which is why I am

getting the bridges, cause I am only 17, and so may have ot wait a

while for surgery. Oh well, I wont be able to find out till July,

which is when my appointment is, as I wont be abel to get an

appointment before then. I will just have to hope that my ortho knows

what he is doing!!!
