Guest guest
Hi everyone! My 16 year old daughter is scheduled to have her lower jaw moved back on June 30th. We have our family vacation (planned several months ago) to Ocean City, MD, scheduled July 31 to Aug 7th . She'll only be 4-1/2 weeks post-op at that time. Both my husband and I think we should cancel the vacation this year. Eating out is one of the best things about vacation. She says she will be fine and we should go. As a concerned mom, your comments/thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks, Elaine
Guest guest
My understanding is she also cannot get her head wet in the ocean water, only showers and baths at home, in case of infection from the lovely 'clean' water...I also think that each person healing and recovery time is so different. From what I have read on this site if she is only have her lower jaw done that she would probably be feeling pretty good by the time of your vacation. I would also check with her surgeon Post-op Vacation Hi everyone! My 16 year old daughter is scheduled to have her lower jaw moved back on June 30th. Guest guest
Hi Elaine, I think your daughter should be feeling very well at 4 weeks post op. I had upper jaw surgery which is worse than lower because it involves your sinus cavity ect and I was doing great at 4 weeks. I was still not permitted to chew but I managed to eat out in restaurants starting at 3 weeks post op. In fact one of the easiest things for me to eat were land crabcakes. They were so easy to mush up with a fork and just swallow. Also, I didnt go swimming for exercise but I did go in the pool at about 4 weeks post op. I live in Miami Beach & found it to be relaxing for me to sit out by the pool, read magazines, drink smoothies & go for dips in the pool. Check with your daughter's surgeon, but I really think there is no need to cancel the trip. She can have a good time too.
Guest guest
Elaine, The younger you are, the faster you heal. How many times as a parent have you looked at your child and thought, if that were me, I'd be flat on my back after they twisted a knee or slammed into something? How many times have you thought, with a fever like that I'd be laying in bed rather than running around? My surgery is June 22nd, and I am planning on coaching a soccer tournament in mid July. The boys may even be happy if I can't vocalize so much! ;-) But, I did postpone our family vacation due to the surgery. My surgeon has told me to expect a liquid diet for 3 weeks and a soft foood for the next 3. Being that I love to eat steak and ribs on vacation, plus other commitments in early August, we postponed until Thanksgiving. At 16, she'll heal faster. If she's willing to go to the beach knowing that she might still have a limited diet, then go for it. Nothing is more relaxing than the beach, and it may be a good place to finish up her recuperation at worst case. Dammit > Hi everyone! Guest guest
I'd ask the surgeon what he or she thinks... I believe I remember some folks saying that summer heat really affected them post op. (Mainly, though, I think they were people who had upper jaw work.) Also the cold of winter hits some people badly. How predictable any of this is, I dunno. Tell surgeon how long you're planning to be gone, and how far away you'll be. I think I was seeing the surgeon about every two weeks at that point... Cammie > > Hi everyone!
