Hi. I am caregiver for my mother. I love this site. I have a recipe for those of you with loved ones that have problems with bowels. Her home health nurse gave it to me..Works wonders and is safe for anyone on any kind of medicine. Its all natural...

1/3 Cup Wheat bran...*not in grocery..health food store*

1/3 Cup applesauce

1/3 Cup Prune Juice

Inial dose is 2 tablespoons..after that 1 tablespoon each night..give at night so it works and they have BM next morning...I would swear by it..my mom had such hard stools and this was great..

I know this is an ucky subject but it has to be covered lol..Hope this helps someone with caring for their loved one..thanks for listening.

Thanks for this recipe. My mother has tried nearly every laxative in

the stores. they only seem to work for awhile. Right now she's using

Senekot which seems to be doing the trick. Because she's always been

" told " that you should never use a laxative for fear of becoming

dependent on it, I think she has it in her mind that this means her,

too. :)) So, between her family physician and I, I think we've finally

got it through her head that it's OK for her to take a laxative every

day or nearly every day to keep things moving. :))

Take care,

-Jane

There was another recipe that was floating around a few years ago for a high fiber paste... Vera do you have that one?

Barb Pond,

While that homebrew may help, I am sure it is not enough for most MSA

constipation. The doctor (gastro specialist who works with Dr. Freeman in

Boston) suggested a regular routine of either Metamucil or Citrocel daily mixed

with orange juice or even applesauce. But be sure to mix it with liquid BEFORE

taking it as it helps it work.

I suspect this receipe because of the reference to wheat bran not from a grocer

but from a healthfood store - sorry wheat bran is wheat bran no matter where it

comes from. Nabisco makes it and it is available at most grocers here. As far

a nutritional value, you are better off with oat bran as there is evidence that

it helps the heart more.

Oatmeal is good for you :o) but I don't like it :o) bran flakes and any fiber is

good for you, you should get more than 25 grams of fiber each day (which is

difficult with american food tastes). Fat soluable bran (Metamucil) is

considered by food experts to be better for you also. I don't remember how much

the doctor recommended but it seems it was two times a day at least.

Take care, Bill Werre
