Guest guest
New to the group. My teenage son is having surgery June 16. My biggest worry appears to be that he'll have nausea and throw- up...Any comments from others about handling this. I worry that he'll aspirate. Secondly, I'd be interested in any recipes and ideas for nutrition. Thanks in advance.
Guest guest
Hi , If he's prone to nausea, let the hospital staff know before hand. I believe they can give him something in his IV for that. As for throwing up, he will not be allowed to have anything for about 8-12 hours before the surgery, so there won't be anything to throw up. I did throw up post-op, twice - the first two times I got up out of bed to go to the bathroom. It will feel good to do that! I threw up blood that was in my tummy (the tubes they put in will take most of the blood away, but not all). It's just important to know that this might happen, otherwise the sight of all that blood can really freak you out. I was a little embarassed because the blood got all over the mirror and sink in my private bathroom, but the nurse was very nice about it and cleaned it all up. I went through more than a few gowns because of that and also dribbling water as I tried to re- learn how to drink post-op. If you want to read some tips, recipes and also some personal surgery experiences, there's lots of great info on this site http://www.geocities.com/orthognathicinfo And of course, there are lots of experienced people here - a number of us go through the procedure every week or so, and all can help if you have questions even pre-oppers. Guest guest
Hello. I had upper/lower surgery 3/11. I too was terrified of throwing up. I had had palate expander surgery in 2002 and had been incredibly nauseous. This time, I talked about it with my surgeon and told him how prone I was to getting queasy. He shared the info with the anesthesiologist and had them bring me to a bit slower, which helped a great deal. So immediately post op, I was not nauseous. The next morning when the feeling returned, I held my ground about not being wheeled anywhere until I had swallowed some ginger ale. This also was a big help. Good luck. Fran > New to the group. Guest guest
I didn't have any trouble at all with this -- but I only had lower. If it does happen, there are indeed injections they can give that will stop it dead in its tracks, and the doc can also send you home with suppositories (I think they're Phenergan) that will help. Guest guest
that was my biggest fear too. getting sick is horrible enough on any normal day, but with your jaws wired shut... yuck! i was given anti- nausea medicine before and after surgery. also, my surgeon stuck a tube down my throat (through my nose) to suck out all the blood. i had this tube in me for the first 24 hours after surgery. the whole purpose of the tube was to prevent me from spitting up blood. but one of the nurses messed with it and it started to come out... thus, the suction stopped. at one point when i was walking back from the bathroom, tubes, IV and everything attached, i started feeling sick and there you have it, i spit up blood all over the very nurse who messed the thing up in the first place. you know what? it wasn't bad at all. i had three nurses standing right by: one to suction the blood out of my mouth, one to push the tube back down my throat and another extremely attractive male nurse to wipe my face with a cool cloth (a nice feature of my experience was this male nurse - and no i didn't dream him). i'm not telling you this to scare you... i'm more saying that its not a big deal. he'll have liquids in his system and if he throws up, it'll come out the same way the liquids go in (through his teeth). it will suck and he won't like it, but its momentary and not painful or serious. hopefully, he won't get sick! there are so many things to prevent it, that chances are good that it won't happen. > New to the group. Guest guest
Hi, I am 3 1/2 weeks post op...and I was very worried about getting sick after the surgery. I told my anesthesiologist and he said not to worry, so I didn't...and I didn't get sick. He gave me anti nausea stuff before and I was fine. He made me feel better by letting me know that if I do get sick I haven't had anything to eat in the past 12 hours, so it would only be blood. Even though your teeth are wired and you have a splint, there are lots of little holes were fluid can get through. I also found it very easy to breathe through my mouth, it's not as bad as you imagine. theatermom2004 theatermom@...> wrote: New to the group. My teenage son is having surgery June 16.
