First post-surgery dental cleaning

Hi Val. I haven't had a cleaning yet because I had one right before

my surgery, but I'd definitely be able to have one now (8 1/2

weeks). I had a root canal last week and had no problem opening,

etc... I was not wired or banded, though, so I've been doing opening

exercises for several weeks. If you're wired or banded for six

weeks, I'd imagine it would still be a while before you could have a

cleaning due to the opening issue. Swelling might also be an issue--

I think they'd have a little trouble getting to my very back molars

due to residual swelling in my upper cheeks (will it EVER go

away????). A cleaning would actually feel really good right now.

When's your surgery again? If you get in an emergency situation and

need some help, let me know (I'm the Amy in Dallas). I've got two

kids who are out of school for the summer so I'm not always

available, but I'd sure be willing to help a stranded post-op patient

if I can. Good luck! ---Amy

Thanks, Amy, I really appreciate your help. My surgery is date is

June 10th, assuming everything goes as planned. I thought not being

able to clean well post-op creates so dirty mouth so quickly that

people will rush to the hyginist as soon as physically possible. If I

may ask, how did you feel in this regard?

Thanks,

Val

Hi Val,

I didn't have a dental cleaning for quite a few months post-op. If

your jaw opening is limited, as mine was, the hygienist won't really

be able to get to the inside of your teeth. Also think of the

pressures you'd be putting trying to hold your mouth open that long -

I've always had trouble with that, and it was worse post-op (it's

better now, though, I don't shake anymore trying to hold my jaws

open).

I was worried about this, but my hygienist said not to worry, to be

diligient in cleaning my mouth as best I could, that serious

problems are not likely to develop in that short period of time.

I would most definitely go careful with flossing as well. I still

believe my friend caused some of her problems when trying to floss

her rear molars during the first week post-op.

You might want to book one close to your surgery on this side,

though.
