Guest guest
Val: re. the teeth cleaning question. Yes, I wanted to have mine cleaned after the first week. My surgeon had me use a mouthwash called Peridex for the first two weeks to keep the incisions clean and prevent tooth decay. Unfortunately, it also temporarily (i.e. until you get them cleaned) discolors your teeth. Mine look kind of yellow/brown to me (my husband swears it's not noticeable). The orthodontist says it will go away when I get my braces (and the underlying sealant) off or get my teeth cleaned. Since I have about 2 months of braces left, I've opted to wait to get them cleaned. I'd get them cleaned right before your surgery (I did mine about 4 days before) and then wait until your surgeon gives you the go ahead after the surgery to do it again. Mindy: I'm in Dallas too and had my surgery here. Who's your surgeon and where will your surgery be? There are lots of pre-op suggestions and lists in the Database or Files section of this site and Site 2. Also check 's Geocities website. Are you having upper, lower, or both? That will probably make a difference as far as how long your recovery is. I had both and would probably have been able to go back to work at about 3 weeks, but preschool is exhausting! You might also have trouble talking if you are wired or tightly banded. Unlike my 3 and 5 year olds, I'll bet your kids will be able to help you out at home, at least. You should probably prepare them ahead of time for how you'll look when you come home (puffy and maybe bruised). My mom and husband also had lots of talks with my kids about how mommy was not going to feel good when she got home and that they should be really sweet and not jump around or hit her in the face! They actually adjusted to the whole process pretty quickly, so I'm sure your kids will too. I had them stay with my folks for the first week after the surgery since I would not be much help in taking care of them, but I'll bet yours will be fine. --Amy > My name is Mindy and I live in Dallas.
