Hi, Sharon. I haven't been involved in this discussion (which takes

place on virtually every large group, BTW!), but it took me a while to

figure out that cut and paste thing too. I only have to use it when I'm

replying to messages in digest form. Here's my (amateurish) version:

What you want to do is figure out which parts of any given message you

want to reply to. You then highlight them on your screen by going to

the beginning of the part you want, left-clicking with your mouse, and

dragging your cursor down until you're at the end. The whole area you

want should be highlighted.

Then, you look at the top of your screen for a button that will say

something like " Edit " . I used to use Eudora, and that's what mine said;

I'm not sure about other e-mail programs. Anyway, when you click on the

Edit button, it will give you a bunch of options, including " cut " ,

" copy " , and " paste " . You want to copy the bit you just highlighted, so

hit " copy " . This will stay copied in your computer's temporary memory

until you put something else in on top of it.

Now, open the new e-mail you want to send. If you are replying from the

digest, as I do, you should open a brand new e-mail. After addressing

the e-mail, and putting in some kind of header that lets people know

more or less what you're going to be ranting...uh...discoursing

intelligently about, you take your cursor to the top of your message,

go back to your " Edit " button, and hit " paste " . The text you recently

highlighted should show up in your brand new letter. Yay!

What I usually do after this is put something ahead of the pasted bit

telling who originally said it. Then I mark it with a " carat " -- one of

these things: > , to let people know that it's a quote, not something I

said myself. Then I just go ahead and respond to it, either as a whole

quote, or divvying it up as needed, with carats to show the difference

between my thoughts and the other person's.

I know this sounds complicated, but it's really not. It becomes a habit

when you've done it a few times, and takes a lot less time than hitting

the " respond " button to the entire digest, then going through and

erasing the parts of the digest you're *not* responding to! Like you,

I'm no natural computer nerd, but cutting and pasting is a very useful

skill. Hey! It's my Christmas gift to you! LOL

Have a wonderful day....

I.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this. I do know how to

cut and paste (not to much else though) but I just got a new puter and

realized how different things can be depending on the version of program you

are runnning. I am sure this is really going to help those as puter

illiterate as myself!! I was thinking...is there any way that you can

" save " this message and periodically resend it? This might really help to

alleviate the stress to those who read digest! Thanks again, P.
