I was diagnosed with TMD about 5 years ago. This is a disorder where the disk

in your jaw joint has popped out of place and is causing your joint to be a

little crazy. Some symptoms include a clicking or popping sound, getting stuck

in an open or closed bite, and some swelling and pain associated with the

joint. Having TMD is definitely a lifestyle change that you are going to need

to make. You have to watch what you eat, as some chewy foods will really

aggravate the joint, and you will need to be on pain control constantly. I am

on Vioxx for the pain, and it works great. The internet is also a great source

for information. Just search for TMD or TMJ on google or yahoo. Good luck and

please ask if you have any questions!!

I have also been diagnosed with TMD, but I'm not on/haven't been on

any pain killers. A lot of the pain went away when the orthodontist

put me into a splint. The headaches disappeared that very night,

and the jaw pain subsided as the joint was allowed to relax. Two

years in a splint, two years in braces, and then surgery 10 weeks

ago ... yes, it's a lifestyle change, but depending on the cause it

can sometimes be fixed, or at least greatly lessened. I never had

my disc slipping out of joint, but I did have debilitating joint

pain and a LOT of muscular trouble in that whole area, stemming from

the jaw joint.

My advice would be to find an orthodontist with a lot of experience

with TMD. He can figure out what exactly is causing your TMD and

hopefully, how to fix or alieviate it.

Hi a,

I found this article on the internet. It's a little dated but will

probably tell you more about TMJ disorders than you ever wanted to

know.

http://www.utmb.edu/otoref/Grnds/tmj-1998/tmj.htm

I have dealt with TMJ problems all my life and have gone through

most of the treatments described including 5 jaw surgeries (2

orthognathic and 3 joint surgeries) with at least one more in my

future. I currently wear a splint and bands and recently finished

another course of physical therapy. My pain is fairly well

controlled with Vioxx or Celebrex along with Tylenol. A TENS unit

also gives me a lot of relief. Let me know if you have any other

questions.
