Guest guest
I wear an AFO (brace/splint) on my left foot. 1) I have SCA, possibly sporadic OPCA, late onset (50's). Does anyone know whether the need for AFO's is linked to any particular type of SCA? I wonder if this would give me a clue to the type of SCA I have. I would be interested in hearing from those of you with AFO's as to the type of SCA you have or suspect you have. 2) I have a recurring and very painful problem with a callous on the sole of my left (AFO) foot. I would be very keen on exchanging information on the handling of this problem with others with AFO's that also suffer from a callous. Mine at times makes the wearing of the AFO unbearable. Comments from others will also be welcomed. Podiatrists and neurologists have not been of much help to me in respect to this matter. As the above are rather specialized problems, please feel free to email me privately should you so prefer. Thanks. Fred Seeker

I have AFO's and 2 full foot insoles that have a bump - like area between the front of my toes and my arch. I was having callous problems big time and it turned out that my foot changed, thus the brace didn't fit properly. I find that new balance and easy spirit gym shoes are the only ones that fit the braces. Also, the more shoe eyelets the better the fit and ease of putting on the shoes without rubbing the skin. Take ur brace back with the shoes u wear to the person who made it so that they can see how u walk in them. nancy m. > I wonder if this would give me a clue to the type of SCA I have. > I would be interested in hearing from those of you with AFO's as to the type > of SCA you have or suspect you have. > > 2) I have a recurring and very painful problem with a callous on the sole of > my left (AFO) foot. > > I would be very keen on exchanging information on the handling of this > problem with others with AFO's that also suffer from a callous. Guest guest
nancy m., Thanks for your advice, but I have already tried all the obvious things. The orthotists (a large outfit that makes many AFO's all the time) say the AFO fits the leg properly. It was custom-made for me. I've seen a podiatrist and all the usual remedies for callouses have been tried. My wife also works on the callous daily, but I still have intermittent pains. A specialized laboratory has made an insert to match the sole of my foot. It was supposed to solve the problem but hasn't done so. I also wear a Scholl's gel sole in the AFO for its cushioning effect. I have tried different brands of shoes and, like you, ended up with New Balance (cross-training) with extra shoe eyelets for a better fit. I think my problem has to do with the complex interaction of nerves, muscles etc. and I may have to see an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in legs/feet, have a scan etc.; a very time-consuming exercise which I had hoped to avoid! If you or anybody else have any further ideas/suggestions I should be pleased to hear from you. Fred Seeker
