Guest guest
Hey , I could eat soft foods (pudding, yogourt, etc) after 2 weeks when my surgeon took my heavy bands off, and replaced them with 3 lighter bands. He said I could take the bands off to eat and brush my teeth. I'm 5 weeks post-op now and I haven't tried drinking with a straw simply because if it's a thin liquid I just drink it, and if it's thick like a milkshake I use a spoon. But I'm sure I would've been comfortable using a straw after about 2 or 3 weeks. Hope things are going well with you! ~Kirstin > just curious about how long it was before you could have soft foods > with a spoon? also about how long before you could drink with a > straw? > thanks, > kristin
Guest guest
Hey . I drank liquids through a straw at 5 or 6 days post op. I became very hungry and frustrated with eating through a suringe, and was determined to drink thru a straw. It's was sort of difficult, but I managed to make it work. My OS took my splint out at 2 weeks, and I've only had 2 bands on since then, and was able to eat soft-no chew foods then. I will be 4 weeks post op on thursday and my OS said I will be able to start chewing next week! Good luck, and let me know if I can help w/anything else. Guest guest
Same caution as with the Waterpik. Don't do it until the doc sez it's ok. Some surgeons don't want you using or trying to use a straw until they give the OK. Sucking can also give the stitches a problem -- that's one reason the Zippies can be so helpful. With them, you squirt the liquid into your mouth, and you don't have to do any sucking. Guest guest
I am far away from surgery, but with the new braces was doing some checking for oral care products. Has anyone been able to use " Rincinol " , it's a new product from GUM- to relieve oral mouth pain? Looking at the ingredients, it seems like there are some items that are potential collagen-builders, to facilitate healing of the gums (epithelium). I ordered some at the Walgreens site, cheapest I could find, and will report back on it.
Guest guest
Hi Ronda- Do you have screws? I am 5 weeks post op and still banded. I, too, had a splint and wires for the first 2 weeks. At 6 weeks I will be able to chew soft foods. It seems that most people have screws...but I don't. Just curious about other people without screws. Although...sometimes my friends say I have a few screws loose...hehehe. Just kidding. Bye, hawaiidreamer06 hawaiidreamer06@...> wrote: Hey . I drank liquids through a straw at 5 or 6 days post op. Guest guest
Hi ! Yes, I do have screws. I have 3 on each side of my lower jaw, and then I have 4 plates on my upper jaw. Do you have plates? Just curious as to what type of surgery you had that didn't require screws! Can you open any to eat? Guest guest
I had my lower jaw moved back only. I didn't have any screws or plates and have been completely wired (1st 2 1/2 weeks) or banded since my surgery over 5 weeks ago. I can't open my mouth at all to eat...just liquids. At 6 weeks post op I will be debanded...and I will be able to open my mouth. I can't wait!! It seems like everyone here has screws...Has anyone out there had surgery or will be having surgery without screws? hawaiidreamer06 hawaiidreamer06@...> wrote: Hi ! Yes, I do have screws. Guest guest
I had screws for my lower advancement. There is a way of doing the surgery on the lower jaw, if I am not mistaken, that involves a vertical cut and requires wiring, or so I have read. I'm under the impression, perhaps mistaken, that it does not use the rigid internal fixation with screws and plates. I believe some docs prefer that procedure because it can be more nerve-sparing, and they have better results with it from the standpoint of avoiding numbness. My surgeon, however, used the bilateral sagittal split osteotomy, was very careful and very good, and I never had any numbness. I have been quite pleased with the results, as have been many others who have had each kind of procedure. I'd want, and did want, my surgeon to do it however he believed best.
