Guest guest
Hi there, I recently consulted an orthognathic surgeon to fix what I thought was an open bite, but he informed me that I had no problem with the bite itself. Apparently I have what is called " Maxillary excess " , and this is causing the angle of my lower jaw to look slightly askew and set back - giving it a " weak " appearance. He told me I would actually need UPPER jaw surgery, which was quite a shock (not that I had any preference as to which jaw was operated on mind you, I just always thought my problem had to do with my lower jaw, not the upper). He tried to explain the concept of " autorotation " to me, apparently when the upper jaw is shortened vertically the lower jaw will then rotate into place, creating a nice symmetry between the two jaws. Has anyone had this surgery done before? Was there a noticeable difference in the lower jaw after the surgery was done? Can anyone comment on the pain/and or recovery time of this surgery? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
