What a crash (reactive hypoglycemia)

(I'm copying this to Kane group, as probably most on there are not aware that

this is an occurrence that seems to crop up for some people after a year or

more post-op. Forewarned is forearmed).

-------------------------

Ate several handfuls of mixed nuts last evening, over the course of about

15-20 minutes. Felt a bit chilly, so put on a sweater. Five minutes later,

suddenly felt EXTREMELY warm. Hot. Esp in my face and neck. Took a look in

the mirror and from chest up to top of my head was bright red. This scared me

a bit, but I just assumed there must be some kind of nut in the mix that I'm

allergic to. I do snack on nuts regularly, but not always the kinds in the

mixed bag.

Of course, I immediately stopped eating. Felt a bit queasy in the stomach,

but not gassy, not barfy. Felt I " wanted " something, but couldn't identify

what. Took a couple sips of water. Nope, not that. Decided to wait it out a

bit and if things were still all red, I would go to the all night clinic and

get checked out for allergic reaction. About 15 minutes later, I got colder

than I ever have with any kind of flu or sickness. To the point of

uncontrollable teeth chattering. Put on 2 pr sox and 2 slippers, 2 sweaters

and a chenille robe, boa around my neck, and a pair of knitted gloves. Had DH

settle me in the recliner and wrap my feet with an afghan and cover me with 3

blankets. Still freezing, still teeth chattering. Drank a cup and a half

clear hot broth. No help. DH says " have u checked your blood sugar? " I'm

like, DUH! Never had a bout of reactive hypoglycemia act quite like THIS b4,

but why didn't I think of that? BS was 74, not terribly low (I've been down

as low as 46 in previous attacks) but not anywhere near MY normal which runs

hi 90's, low 100's.

Anyway, it's bcuz of that BS reading that I'm classifying this as a reactive

hypoclemia episode. But I'm wondering if anyone else out there has had

something similar. Any time I've had one of these in the past, it seems to

have been triggered by CARBS, sweets in particular. It's like, too much sugar

and my pancreas goes crazy and pumps out so much insulin, my BS drops like a

rock. And the antidote has always been protein. BUT, no sugar in nuts, right?

So, why would they cause this kind of reaction? Anybody know? And I've never

gotten a case of the hots and then chills like this before, either. Usually

just get kinda clammy and a bit dizzy and then realize ok, I'd better check

the BS and it's usually low; and most often a lot lower than 74. Is this RG

syndrome something that just keeps increasing in intensity as we get farther

out?

Or what..................

Yes!!! I have had this happen, but like you said usually after

haveing sweets... shortbread cookies did me in the other day. I don't

understand why the nuts might have done that to you. I've also taken

my BS before exercising and then again after and it had dropped

majorly.. from 96 to 54. Yep, the shaking, feeling like going to pass

out. I make sure to have something before I exercise now. Usually a

little cheese. Let me know what you find out, I'm curious.
