Guest guest
I'm having lower jaw advancement about 6mm. This will (obviously) be to align my bite better. My question is I'm wondering about the improvement in my profile (receding chin). Will this improve my profile? or is genioplasty needed? My OS hasn't recommended it; but 10 years ago when I first had braces as a teen, my surgeon then recommended it. Just want your opinions. How much did just lower jaw surgery improve profile? I don't want extra surgery if it is not needed. Thank you. carrie
Guest guest
Along with upper surgery, my lower jaw was advanced 5mm. I don't think it made a huge impact on my appearance. My chin is definitely stronger, but it's a very subtle aesthetic change. As for genio, I'm assuming you specifically asked your surgeon about whether or not you needed it. Mine could not give me a recommendation one way or the other until just a few days before surgery after all my surgical molds were taken. He had to study those to determine whether or not genio would be needed. They must have figures on what the norm for a chin is supposed to be, because here's what he told me, " I thought you might need augmentation after surgery, but after studying the molds, I find that your chin will actually be slightly larger than normal, but slight enough that I don't recommend having genio to change it. " I have pics posted on site 2 if you're curious. Everyone's experience is unique. Genio was never something my surgeon discussed with me until I brought it up from reading these boards. If you have not talked with yours about it yet, I highly recommend that you do so. > I'm having lower jaw advancement about 6mm. This will (obviously) > be to align my bite better. Guest guest
Have a look at my pictures, if you wish. I had lower advancement of 5 mm, with 3 mm. movement to the side. No genio. Friends say they can tell a bit of a difference. I can't, really, but my ortho could, because then he had enough room in my lower jaw to finish his work. I asked my surgeon whether he could, and he said, " Cammmie, it's a quarter of an inch! " which I took to mean " no. " I don't have a strong chin, and never will. But I don't think I'd have wanted the genio unless my docs had said it needed to happen. The amount of surgery I had was quite enough for me! Cammie > I'm having lower jaw advancement about 6mm.
