Hi Lia,

I had gum grafting, i am not sure if you would begetting the same. I

had it done before I ever had my braces put on (my ortho & surgeon

both said i had to do it). I am now 7.5 months post op from upper

jaw surgery.

I saw my periodontist for a check-up on Wednesday and he told me my

gums are great! So I am happy.

Now for the scary part, gum grafting is very expensive. It depends

on how much you have done so really what I tell you I paid will nto

help you at all. They base the price on quadrants. I suggest you

set up a consult with a periodontist. This way you can find out what

you need & what it will cost.

I spent about $3600 on my gum grafting.

Regards,

I also had a gum graft, but it was only to cover one tooth that had

an exposed root. I believe the total cost was around $600, but my

dental insurance picked up some of the cost. I had to pay for the

molds taken to make a splint to cover the roof of my mouth after the

surgery, and I had to pay I think 30% of the cost per my insurance

agreement. I think my total that I had to pay worked out to around

$250.

I would give it a while to settle down - when they said 'did a

number' do they mean your gums have receeded? I have too much gum

so I have had mine 'contoured' aka cut off about 3mm all around my

gum line.

I would try root planning it helps the gum to adhere back to the

teeth. (basically if you haven't had it done they freeze you and

make sure the roots of the teeth are clean so the gums better adhere

if you are having receeding gums or loose pockets it would be a good

idea)

It depends what you are getting done, I had mine for 300, but if

there's grafting involved etc. you could be looking for more. Take

care of gums as without them there goes your teeth ;)

But the mouth breathing thing is new to me.

I am a mouth breather too and it makes my front gums red all the

time. Besides that.....I have ground my teeth down over the years

and they are very square. I talked to my dentist about it and he

says that I should get veneers. I am not going to shell out any

MORE money. I talked to my ortho and we discussed (very briefly)

reshaping my gums to expose more teeth. Neither will talk much

about it to me until my braces come off. I am assuming that

insurance would not cover gum surgery but if you (shiloh) only paid

$300, I could live with that. Did they do it in a dentist office or

is there a specialist for this? Did it hurt? -- In

Taking off gum is much easier than gum grafting.

Basically its like cutting off your nail cuticles with a knife.

They just block you up and cut away.

Actually it was quite sore more sore than the bsso stitches as its

along the bottom of all your teeth. But gum contouring is usually

pretty cheap, and pretty quick I don't think it took longer than 30

minutes probably less.

And it does look better, but part of the reason they charge you less

is it sometimes grows back. You are wise not to get venneers yet if

you are still grinding - def. get a bite plate. Wait to get

veneers, they have to take off alot of enamel to get the veneer on

and it weakens the tooth..and not to mention pricey!
