Lower as Outpatient Surgery

With only 11 days to go for my lower only surgery I am finding out

that my surgeon plans to do this as an outpatient procedure. While

this may sound a bit far fetched, I think he's protecting my

financial assets with this plan. He has me checking in to the

hospital for the surgery, and a 23 hour hold on me after surgery.

That way I'm never officially admitted to the hospital, but get to

stay the night if needed. Has anyone else experienced this for lower

only?

I didn't exactly do it that way, but had a near variant. Checked into

the hospital at 12:01 Tuesday morning. Had surgery at 7 a.m. Spent

the night in a post-anesthesia intensive care unit and left on

Wednesday about 1 p.m. Saved me one day's hospital expense.

I was grateful to have that morphine pump the first night, and to

have a nurse right at hand (but you have that at home, don't you?),

but I didn't get into any trouble at all.

My doc, however, had asked approval for up to a five-day stay, just

in case. (Some folks have bad reactions to the anesthesia,

painkillers, etc. Others sometimes encounter other troubles. It's

rare, but it has happened occasionally.)

I'd bet you'll be fine. Lower onlies have a lot easier time, I think,

as we generally don't have to deal with the breathing issues and

congestion that upper folks can encounter.

And to answer you directly -- yes, some people have had surgery as

outpatients. Some docs even have surgery suites in their offices, and

do them there.
