Nantahala neuropathy: CMT1B with trigeminal neuralgia and other cranialneuropathiesJ , W , C Barbee, W SeltzerP1365A new mutation in the gene for Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 1B is associatedwith hemifacial spasm and restless legs syndrome in some patients, according to this report. Genetic and clinical analysis of 6 patients fromone large family originating in North Carolina revealed all had the samemutation in the gene for myelin protein zero, the cause of CMT1B. Patientshad primarily sensory neuropathy with some distal weakness and pes cavus.Five patients had restless legs syndrome. Three patients had hemifacialspasm. One of these, plus two other patients, had trigeminal neuralgia. All patients are descended from a common ancestor who lived in the late1700s, and family members have spread across many states within the USA.The authors believe there are likely to be many other family members withthis mutation yet to be discovered.
