Hi,

I'm about to get my surgery soon. I wonder if it is convenient to

take classes following my orthognathic surgery? Does it bother a

lot? Or is it better to take a semester break?

Thanx!

Well, hi! How you doing? I've been thinking about you, and hoping

that all goes well.

Depends on what your classes are, I'd say. Do you have to talk a lot?

Are your teachers sympathetic types, who will understand if you're

wired, have a splint, or have little energy? I would NOT advise

trying to play basketball, or football, soon after surgery!

You'll probably be weary. You might want to take a light load for one

semester, or at least discuss that with your adviser or dean. At the

least, you want to let the folks there know that you're working

against some obstacles in getting through the courses, depending on

how soon post op you're going back...

When is your surgery? Iam scheduled for early July so I managed to

take 6 credits the first summer term and I am taking an independent

study the second summer term so I can get nine credits in over the

summer, I think I will be ok by the start of the fall semester as I

will be 6 weeks post-op at that time.

Talk to your professors or advisor about independent study or

distance education for that semester if you school has such a thing.

What all are you having done, isantoso?

I had upper jaw surgery and I went back to work in 8 days. I didnt

think it was exhausting, but then, I have a sit-down job.

It will not be a secret that there is something wrong with you after

surgery. Which is good because people (read, 'professors') have more

sympathy for what they can see with their own eyes. You will probably

look swollen, tired, you will talk funny, and you will be thinner. Im

not saying you're going to be a hhideous sideshow attraction or

anything like that. But you will look different, especially to people

who've seen you before. So MAKE SURE that these people have seen you

before. Mention that you're going to be out of class for a week or

two. They might be perfectly amenable to your situation. And

remember you are going to have several surgical/orthodontist/medical

appointments before your surgery to schedule too.

For more sympathy, bring some Ensure to class. ;)

Unless you're having an extensive amount of work done, you are

probably going to be disappointed if you take a whole sememster off.

And bored. You should be okay as long as you dont try to take 2 labs

and 18 credits. Thats hard even when you ARE in great shape. Gym is

going definitely not gonna be for you though. If you're in one of

those colleges that require gym for freshmen, you might have to get an

excuse from their health & medical services to get the semester off.
