Guest guest
We are wondering what others feel about the controversy over the use of Sinemet for MSA. There have been recent articles that suggest that Sinemet may actually be conterproductive due to facilitating the production of toxins from presence of proteins. Has anyone discontined using Sinemet and what were the results or changes if any? Have there been any adverse symptoms returning if any after stopping taking Sinemet. tapered his dosage over the past two weeks and has not noticed any changes. His nuero discussed this with us before we decided to eliminate the Sinemet. Thanks for any input regarding this. If anyone has any other articles or information please put on the list. and ( In way to hot Hilton Head)
Guest guest
I don't have a real answer for your question but Dr. Levesque in LA told me to discontinue Sinemet because he felt that it is of no benefit to me. From my perspective, one less drug to take is great. I have started tapering off of it and I too have seen no difference in my symptoms. Guest guest
Our neuro told us that in time sinemet would not do any good since MSA is not a true Parkinsons. He was right. But Ralph went ahead and insisted on using it , more from habit than from benefits received. -- Barb in Arlington "The greater part of our happiness or misery depends on our dispositions, and not our circumstances." --Martha Washington
Guest guest
Hello! My father started to take Sinemet a few months ago. It had been prescribed by a neurologist (who was not a MSA specialist) at my father's nursing home. At the time the nursing home staff was concerned about increasing tremors in his arm. He seemed to be weaker after he started taking it and his speech was more slurred. I recommended that he consult with his neurologist who is a specialist in MSA. After consultation he was taken off of the Sinemet. The attendants at the home thought that my fahter's " condition " was worse that he had more tremors again and that he was fainting more often. It was decided that he would go back on the Sinemet and take another medication to help increase his BP because the Sinemet lowers it.... the first DR. never mentionned this. Now the attendants are saying that my dad is having seizures and he has had a EEG. Before getting the results of this test they have put him on Tegratol, an anti-seizure medication. I'm not sure if it is doing any good but his speech is now incomprehensible. This makes me very sad because it so hard to communicate now. It seems to me that his problems are getting worse in some ways and I wonder if it is because of the Sinemet? Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Where did you read or hear about the " controversy " with Sinemet for MSA patients? Thanks Joanne
Guest guest
, Charlotte got some help from Sinemet up to the day she died. Yet I know others who claim it did not help them at all. All in all, I would use the smallest amount possible that gave me relief from the rigidity if it helped me. Charlotte noticed more cramping within two hours (and I did try a placebo once to test her - she was complaining within 30 minutes that the pill had not helped her). In at least one case, a MSA patient did not like the strange feeling he said he got from the Sinemet and stopped the medicine, but did lose movement. In that type of case, the patient should dicuss it with their physician before stopping the med. Personally, I have not seen any research reports mentioning any toxic effects of Sinemet. Can you give me a site for that info?
