Tough day but on the mend

Saturday (post-op day 3) was a bit tough. It started out ok - I

spent most of it watching television and alternating between moist

heat and ice packs - but about 4 p.m. after I took a shower I didn't

feel very good. It's hard to describe other than a generally " icky "

feeling. Maybe I ran out of gas, or my blood sugar was low. Maybe

I hit the proverbial " wall " they say you hit on or around day 3.

My wife suggested perhaps it was the codeine I have been taking

regularly since the surgery. That sounded plausible so I skipped my

codeine dosage before bed.

I woke up around 3 a.m. from some very strange dreams feeling rather

hot and sweaty. As I lay in bed, I began to wonder if I had a

fever. I got up and stumbled into the kitchen. I've learned that a

few ounces of fruit juice can somehow drastically improve how you

feel in a matter of seconds. Am I that malnutritioned already? In

any case, after my juice, a can of Ensure, and another dosage of

meds (this time with codeine) my condition seems to have stabilized.

Back to bed -

I'm no expert, but I too did cut the codeine, tired of these strange feelings

and nightmares. I would woke up, in total sweat (like I'd have ran a couple

of miles under a very hot sun), or totally thirsty.

These symptoms never reappered. I only take Tylenol now, and only once

or twice a day (usually in the morning or the evening). Also, when I get

heat waves again, in the face that is, I use heated towels. It really helps, as

strange as it sounds.

I second that. Whenever I took the codeine before bed, I would wake up a few

hours

later, completely drenched. Once I stopped the codeine, the nightly sweats

ceased.

Hey...

Low blood sugar can hit you pretty much exactly the way you described.

Be sure you're keeping nourished and hydrated!

After re-reading, something came up to my mind... Heat (hot water)

tends to bring the blood pressure down a bit. If the shower was rather

hot and long (10+ minutes), it could have triggered a low pressure problem.

Symptoms are usually (but not limited to) : weakness in the limbs, dizzyness,

general fatigue, and an irresistible need to sleep, like right *now*.

Baths are the worst for that. Showers usually don't pose a similarly great

problem, but for very sensible person, they could have the same effect.

Having just had a surgery, I guess we qualify for sensible person... :-)
