How many have surgery this week? Mine is Thursday. I go to my

preop appointments tomorrow. I am beginning to get very anxious

about the breathing part. I have breathing issues and if I am not

only wired shut but my nose is stuffed up and I am swollen, how am

going to get enough oxygen? I just wish to get this over with. I

would also like to thank everyone on this board for so much info.

You can go on the net and get alot of info but nobody tells you what

REALLY happens. I know I haven't been on here long (I was on

another board for the last year) but I have devoured so much info

just in the last week. Thanks.

Good luck -

I was concerned about the breathing part also. If you just make

them aware of it (you'll have about 10 people asking you the same

questions over and over again) they'll figure something out. Just

remember that 1000 people before you have had this done and they

made it through. The doctors and nurses have seen everything.

You'll be fine.

My surgery's Thursday too! I had an orthodontist appointment today to

try on the splint and get an x-ray done. As far as the orthodontist,

who had just talked to my surgeon, everything's on schedule, but

there's this huge confusing thing going on with the insurance. They

haven't even pre-approved my surgery yet! It's a big mess. Is there

anyone else out there who's had the same thing I'm having done?

They're moving my lower jaw back, and taking out my bottom wisdom

teeth. If anybody else has had that done, anything I should possibly

know about in advance? Or what can I expect? I'm only 17, and I've

never had surgery, so I'm a bit worried. Ok, a lot worried. LOL. I'm

worried about breathing too, because I have problems breathing

through my nose. I think a long time ago someone on here said they

had the same problem and did fine, so that's good. Surely the

surgeons will make sure us patients get enough oxygen, right? lol

Hi -

I had lower jaw surgery also but my wisdom teeth were already out.

I have breathing problems through my nose as well but they hooked up

a humidified oxygen tank for me and I had no problems. They made me

very comfortable in the hospital.

Hi, one of the most useful tips I remembered for the immediate post-

op recovery was not to panic when you wake up. Things are going to

feel strange and different, you'll be numb and uncomfortable. I

wasn't sure if I was getting enough air in, so I took a moment to

check things out - I was able to get a little air in through my mouth

(banded, not wired), and a little through my nose. Between the two, I

figured I'd be ok. I would speak to the anaesthesiologist about it

prior to your surgery. They will not remove the breathing tubes if

you can't breathe on your own. Remember, you're in a great place with

lots of experts for this type of thing.

I used Breathe-Right strips to hold my nose open (you can see one in

my photo on site 2) which was another tip from a vet. I also asked

the nurses to teach me how to clean out my nose with their super

qtips. I used over 600 qtips in about 6 weeks of recovery. It all

helps. Don't blow your nose until your surgeon gives the ok! (mine

said it was ok after a couple of weeks, but to leave my mouth open,

and just do gentle puffs - like that was going to help, NOT!)

Other things that are helpful are sudafed, saline nose spray,

humidifier (I had one going 24 hours a day for weeks & weeks).

That's it, hope it was helpful. Good luck with your surgery prep!

Before using any decongestant (SUDAFED), make sure to check with

your own surgeon. Mine refused to allow me to use these products

untill she says otherwise. I was, however, permitted to use Salinex

at will.

To be safe, always ask your surgeon before using any medicated

product. What's good for one person just might not be good for

someone else. Also, some medication may interfere with other,

like pain killers which will be given to you.

Nobody's suffocated -- or even passed out -- yet, at least that I

remember!

And some folks who have " breathing issues " have been delighted to

wake up and find that for the first time ever, they've been able to

breathe through their noses! I hope for the latter for you.

It can be claustrophobic. Would be for me, I know. But try to

remember that you will get enough air, and try to relax, as best you

can. It's not forever, either, although it may seem to be... Can you

ask your surgeon for some reassurance on this point? At least let him

know it's worrying you, or tell someone in his office, before you

have the surgery. And be sure you have some Sudafed and/or Afrin,

with instructions about using it (too much Afrin = worse rebound

trouble, and that's IMPORTANT) when you come home from the hospital,

as well as a vaporizer.

Best,

Cammie

Should I use a hot or cold steam vaporizor?

Hello again, Jay ...

Way more than 1,000 people have gone before you. My surgeon alone had

done 1,700+ before he got to me, way back in 2002... And he has two

partners, and there are some other surgeons here who also do this

work.

Good advice, Ray. My surgeon prescribed it for me, in liquid form,

although outside of the hospital, it was impossible to find in this

format.
