Hi Everybody,

We need your help again. Denny is really restless in his sleep. Before

we knew he was sick with MSA, he was terrible. He attacked me several

times... someone was after him, he fell out of bed while fighting more

than once, and would yell out and talk in his sleep. Several years

after being diagnosed, his sleep pattern got a lot better and we have

had so problem till now. He is yelling and jumping, his arms frailing. I

run in there when I hear him hollowing and he is sleep. He doesn't

remember anything about it the next morning. I remember some time ago

that some of you were on medication to help stop the acting out of

dreams. Thanks for any help you can give.

Ann,

Only advice I can give is move into the guest room or at least another bed.

Many of us have been through this stage. In self defense - move. It is common.

Take care, Bill Werre

Ann and Denny,

The medication used to treat REM behavior disorder (which is the name for

acting out dreams) is klonopin (clonazapam). It is very effective in

treating this problem, but some people have had bad reactions to it so if

your doctor prescribes it keep a close eye on Denny for the first week or

so. It depresses the central nervous system, so can worsen the MSA symptoms

in some people. (Rob has been taking it for years with no problems.)

My husband broke out in a very heavy rash all over his entire body that

really itched. He had never had a reaction to any medication prior to this,

but doctors stopped the use of klonopin.

Greetings Ann & Denny!

Well, Denny appears to have what is known as REM Behavior Disorder (?

might not have the correct name, but off the top of my head it's

something like that). Denny, your next step probably should be to talk

with your doctor about this. You probably should be referred to a sleep

disorders center. An alternative might be to simply try medication

(Klonopin, I think) and see if it works. It can be managed.

Regards,

Dear Ann and Denny,

The sleep behavior you have written about is exactly the same as what we have experienced. Before we knew that Sheldon had MSA, I had been attacked several times while Sheldon was sleeping. He always said that he thought someone was chasing him and he was fighting back.

The neurologist gave him klonapin (clonazapam)

and his sleep behavior got better. This spring he was in the hospital for 14 days with hepatitis, which the doctors think was a reaction to his medications. He is not back on all his medications yet, but without the clonazapam he is having night fights again. In fact the other night he broke two of his toes and had bloody knuckles on his hand.

He is aftraid to sleep with me and thinks he might hurt me. I have done as Bill suggested, moved in to the guest room for self preservation.

Good luck and best wishes to both of you.

Love and gentle hugs.
