Guest guest
I have a quick question regarding numbness. I've heard that different parts of the face regain feeling at different times, though my numbness really seems to be split right down the middle of my face. If you drew a perfect line from between my eyes to my chin, that would section my face into right and left. My left side seems to have regained feeling fairly well -- even my chin. But my right side is still fairly numb. I was just curious if anyone had encountered this, or if there is an explanation. It just seems kind of weird that it is so symetrical. -AJ
Guest guest
AJ - I have exactly the same thing - the left side of my face has very little numbess, but the right side (lower lip and chin) are still pretty numb. This is 5 days post-op. My OS told me after surgery that the nerves were in good shape so there should be a full recovery. Jay > I have a quick question regarding numbness. Guest guest
Jay, Good to hear about your nerves. It just seems so weird that the numbness is split so perfectly. There must be an explanation. -AJ > > I have a quick question regarding numbness. Guest guest
I think the explanation is that there is a nerve bundle running down each side of the lower jaw. Each bundle is for either the right or left side of the face. When they do the two splits, each nerve bundle gets handled a bit differently with different amounts of disturbance, trauma, whatever word you want to use. The result is you get a different amount of numbness. > > > I have a quick question regarding numbness. Guest guest
Yeah, me too~! My " whole " chin was numb, but my nose was a different story. Long after I regained feeling in my left side, my right side was still numb! I, too, could have drawn a line right down the middle I am 5 1/2 weeks post-op and I have regained feeling everywhere, but I still have an odd stiffness and tingling when I touch my chin. But I am confident that will go away, too. (Think happy, positive thoughts!) ~Cathy
Guest guest
I don't think it is particularly weird, because I think those nerves are pretty symmetrical. (but I stand ready for correction from anybody who's a real student of anatomy.) Just going by the shingles episode. When I got them on the face (which I do hope does not happen to anyone, anywhere, any time) characteristically the nerve on one side or the other is affected. In my case, it was my left side, and it got almost the whole trigeminal nerve. My surgeon, when he was willing to see me again after I was mostly healed from the shingles (those docs didn't want anything to do with treating a virus, believe me! Sent me to my general physician and an eye doc) started telling me where all the left trigeminal nerve went. I said, " Never mind, Doc. I can draw it for you on my face, just by knowing where it hurt. " But the right side was never involved. Actually, I think that's typical all down the body -- you get shingles USUALLY on either the right or the left side, but not on both. Cammie > I have a quick question regarding numbness.
