Non-surgical alternatives to Class III treatment

Dear All,

I have posted on this site only a few times before. I had braces

more than 10 years ago to treat Class III underbite which worked OK.

However, continued mandibular growth (even to this day) has given me

an underbite again. Although I think my jaw should stop growing soon

(praying hard), I may have to consider my options.

Anyhow, since we all know surgery is very traumatic, any

alternatives might be useful. Therefore, has anybody every gone

through the procedure described on this website? Have a look at it -

there are several case studies, which, on the face of it, seem to

have turned out really well. Is it for real, and if so, why aren't

more orthos/maxillofacial surgeons doing it as it seems far less

risky to me!

If anybody has personally gone through this Labial Corticotomy

procedure, I think everybody would really appreciate your accounts

and experiences.

Hope to get some favourable replies/reviews, and best wishes to

everybody on their journey/contemplation into surgery or otherwise!

H.

I'm not at all familiar with this type of treatment. My concern would

be, as they've raised in the article, the long-term health of the

anterior teeth.

It did present some interesting means for Class III pre-surgical

patients to simulate the physical outcome cosmetically of their

surgery in the mirror, though. Even though I don't believe in having

the surgery for cosmetic reasons, it's certainly something that

people are curious about.

Surgery was not traumatic for me at all. I didn't particularly want

to undergo surgery, but once I realized it was the best possible

alternative in the long term, and researched it more, I was prepared

for it. And fortunately, things went very well for me.

Good luck with your decision!

I can't get there with that link -- and yes, I was cutting and

pasting.

I have read a little about this, though. Best I understand it, the

surgeon (or the ortho) makes some cuts, and those enable the braces

to do their work more quickly.

I got the impression that it's still a pretty new technique, but I

don't know of anybody who's had it...

I'd want to talk a bunch with some orthos and surgeons I really

trusted about this, to check it out. And yep, if you can find

patients who have had it and are either satisfied or dissatisfied,

that'll add to your available info.

I'd also suggest being VERY careful about undertaking treatment while

your jaw is still growing. If your ortho can direct the growth,

that's one thing. But if you're likely to relapse from more growth --

well, I'd rather wait than do it all twice!
