I was recently diagnosed with migraines and am having a VERY tough

time. I'm basically having to give up everything food wise and do an

elimination diet. No wheat, dairy, chicken, many fruits, some

vegetabls, nothing with additives or preservatives- you get the

picture. It's pretty grim. Even my protein shake is out. Any

suggestions of how I can get the protein I need?

Thanks,

in NY

If you can tolerate the taste, tofu should probably be okay. I like tofu,

but only when it is fried!!

Oh, WOW. What a pain. I have been thinking about this but everything I

can think of ends up being in one of the categories you can't have. Have

you asked your doctor? Actually the only thing I can think of is fish

and beef and that can be hard on the budget and/or on my stomach (still

don't do beef well.) Have you thought of rice and beans? Sorry I

couldn't be more help.

Are u allowed to have jello, gelatin? You can add Knox gelatin to sugar-free

jello to boost the protein grams, and u can add it to clear broths as well,

and fruit juices if texture doesn't " uck " you out.

Also, along with the process of trying to find out if your migraines are

food-based, there are many natural herbs, tonics, etc that might be helpful,

as well as alternative therapies like acupuncture, ayurvedic, traditional

Chinese medicine and others. If your doc is a traditionalist, you'll probably

have to scope out these other possibilities on your own.

While trying to identify food-based triggers, there are other causes that can

precipitate migraines, including low magnesium levels and drugs you may be

taking for treatment of other problems. Biofeedback, relaxation training, and

5-HTP supplementation have all proven successful against certain types of

headaches. I'd suggest you consult " The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine " by

Murray and ph Pizzorno, both N.D.'s and fairly prolific writers

on natural healing and supplements. The book is available for reference at my

local Fruitful Yield health food store, and I imagine also at the library.

Good luck in your search for a cure.

Are you taking extra vitamin B2? Apparently, that's a great migraine

reliever for many people.
