I got a tip from a magazine that said that said aspirin, naproxen

(alleve), and ibuprofen (advil) should be avoided before surgery

because they thin the blood and can therefore cause excess

bruising. The article said anyone with surgery planned should use

acetaminophen (tylenol) for the two weeks prior to surgery because

it does not affect the clotting of blood. (A bruise is an area

where blood has leaked out of a damaged vessel or capillary and

pooled beneath the skin, I didn't know that, so I thought I'd add

it). It also said that people with type O blood tend to bruise more

easily due to the makeup of the blood cells, but it doesn't offer

any suggestions to change that (lol). Deficiencies from Vitamins C

and K can also lead to excess bruising. Just a tip I felt I should

pass along. I know that I am prone to using OTC painkillers for

braces related irritations occasionally. Anything that could reduce

bruising post-op would be of benefit to me.

That rings true with my docs' advice. Everytime before surgery, they

say, " no aspirin, no celebrex for a week before. " Even before mild

oral surgery.

Type Os may bruise more, but if so, I'd hate to see it. (I'm A+, and

I bruise like crazy.)

Hi Kim,

One month before my upper/lower surgery on June 2nd, I started taking

1000mg of vitamin C daily along with my Centrum Silver daily

vitamin. Two weeks before surgery, I stopped taking my tablet of

81mg of aspiring. After surgery, I experienced no bruising and my OS

told me that there was very little blood loss. I've started back on

the vitamin C and Centrum Silver. I will check with my OS on Monday

if I can start up with the 81mg of aspirin. Best wishes!

With regards,

Dale

I guess that I must just not have gotten close enough to get those

specifics yet. I can use this to test my surgeon though! I wasn't

told anything before my wisdom teeth came out, should I have been? I

didn't bruise though for that.

Would you believe that at 27 I have no idea what my blood type is. I

have never had blood drawn (maybe at the hospital when I was born).

It isn't even required for marriage licenses in PA anymore (not that

I'm complaining about that). I am petrified of needles. I actually

fainted after getting shots for college. When I had my gum graft, I

was more afraid of the novacaine than of the periodontist slicing

away gum tissue from the roof of my mouth. I'm not sure where this

phobia came from.
