Guest guest
I have a question for you all. The past few days I have had reoccuring boughts of heartburn. Not the severity like the GERD prior to surgery (RNY 4/99) but it is there nonetheless. I know why-- bad bad holiday eating. But I am surprised. It is my understanding that once the stomach is disected there is no way that the stomach acids can regergitate back up the essophagus (sp?). What says the widsom of this group? I know it's the same...twenty years later, as well. Guest guest
You COULD have SLD, for one. If you have a horizontal pouch, it allows a little more acid than a vertical pouch. So, either of those can be what's up. The final choice would be if the " goes outta " limb is connected too high to the stoma. Then the contents of the (old) stomach can back up the pipe. Guest guest
Okay, just one disclaimer here, I had the vbg. But it is my understanding that stuff can still come back up especially if you have eaten too much, too fast or too much acidic type stuff. I have talked to too many people who still have GERD after having had surgery for it not to happen at all. But it could also be a vbg thing. Lori Owen - Denton, Texas CHF 4/14/01 479 lbs. Guest guest
I agree with Jac.... I had GERD before surgery...so bad that the prescriptions were not working any more. After the surgery I had no problems....that is until about almost 2 years post-op. Then it suddenly started again and my tummy was transected. My surgeon had no explanation...just wrote me a prescription...as long as I take my prescription twice a day I am fine. Guest guest
I was told that it would " minimize " the acid reflux. There is just a whole lot less acid in that part of the stomach. Except I would be wicked happy if it prevented it totally seeing both of my parents died of esophagual cancer......and two of my four children already have the reflux......on already has the Barretts Syndrome at 14 years old............ARGH!!!!!!!! But of course they are the two skinny ones who will probably never need WLS anyway. The two heavy ones don't have any reflux (yet) go figure............ P. heartburn > I have a question for you all. Guest guest
Ditto for me except mine never left. Have to take the medication twice a day every darn day or I am in pain. Not the same as before but a gnawing kinda pain that the acid reducer kills. My surgeon just said that it happens with some of us. Guest guest
Well at least I'm not the only one! I'm transected, proximal lap RNY...should have mentioned that. I really thought it was the stress of wedding planning, but now that's over with, and the heartburn remains, so there goes that theory. Just makes me nervous when the bod starts doing things I don't understand...ya know? Kimba Re: A Blast from the past! Hey Kim! Welcome back! Yes, I'm also 3 1/2 yrs post-op and getting heartburn again...also no reflux (I'm now transected), but definite heartburn. Not a clue why. in NJ ************************** > > Ok, I do have a real question while I'm here. Why in the world, 3.5 years healthy years post-op, am I suddenly getting heartburn again? Nothing severe like the acid reflux I had pre-op, but until now I had nothing. Anyone else had this? I always like to have corollary data to take to the internist :*) > > Hugz to all! > Kimba Homepage: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Graduate-OSSG Unsubscribe: mailto:Graduate-OSSG-unsubscribe
