Guest guest
Okay....got my PTH lab report back today..and it's high, indicating hyperparathyroidism. Anyone (sue?) know anything about this, why I would have it and what the ramifications are? Appreciate your input! Thanks~ ´¨¨)) -:¦:- ¸.·´ .·´¨¨)) ((¸¸.·´ ..·´ -:¦:- Jacque -:¦:- ((¸¸.·´*
Guest guest
My PTH was also high. My surgeon said that is expected after surgery, but in my research I couldnt see why. It can be indicative that your body is leaching calcium from your bones, so I increased my calcium citrate to 2800mg/day and now PTH is and has been normal. My total calcium intake is 2600 grams of elemental calcium, in the form of calicum citrate. (I get another 300 - 400 from my multivitamin, but can't tell what that form actually is, so I don't count it). Because three of my doses are actually 700 mg, I am only absorbing 500, so the *actual* absorption is something more like 2000, which is where my dr wants it to be (I am a distal procedure). This regimen brought my PTH back down to where it should be, and we'll see the results in May's dexa-scan. Over a 2 year period, my PTH levels were 30, 38, 22, 69, and 27. Honestly, the 69 may have been an aberration, but I didn't feel like taking the chance. Kate
Guest guest
Marilyn, I copied this to the group as well so you can have the advantage of their input. In my completely unqualified, non-medical opinion, your pcp is full of crap. It may mean nothing, it might be a lab mistake, or it may very well indicate that calcium is being leached from your bones to simply maintain your blood serum calcium levels (producing a normal calcium level). The only way you will know for sure whether calcium is a problem is to have a Dexa-scan (bone density scan). Ask your pcp to schedule one immediately (tell him your rabid gastric bypass friends demanded it!!!). Guest guest
I can't imagine what my PTH levels would have been if I had only gone by the prescribed amount of calcium. At the moment, I'm taking 9,000 mgs with D, magnesium, boron and ipriflavones to help absorb that. I've been taking a lot for a long time...and having my D and magnesium levels checked to make sure they aren't getting too high..and of course, they aren't either. If so, it's a lot. What brand are you taking and how does the label read? Carol A I take 12 Vita4Life vitamins and then an extra 4 of the Vita4Life Calcium Citrate for a total of 2800mg of Calcium Citrate. I have no idea if it is elemental or not. I know it is a lot, but at 2000mg my PTH was elevated and at 2800mg it is not. I must just malabsorb my calcium more than other things. Guest guest
Usually citrate isn't elemental calcium is it? Most of it is 21-29%. According to info I was given by my dexascan lady, we shouldn't take more the 2000 mg of elemental calcium...but then, we are talking normies..right? How much are we actually absorbing of even the elemental stuff. We are all so individual, and must go by our own dexascans...we are our own guinea pigs I am finding.
